I've searched the man page and the code and I don't see it but another thread suggested that avr_evtd disables the watchdog. Does it?

Of course it does, I think I see it now. I should have searched for keepAlive. I guess it's not disabling the watchdog, it's sending the keepalive signal.

exactly. it echo`s the needed string continously to the right device.

if a kernel "disables" the watchdog it does more or less the same...just in the kernel.

The vanilla kernel actually *disables* the watchdog if I'm not mistaken. It sends the same string as shown in this old wiki page: http://kurobox.com/mwiki/index.php/Survive_without_ppc_uartd

I killed my avr_evtd to test this. The box stayed up after 5 minutes and still going.
