OK, I guess I should go ahead and dump out a copy of my kuropro's stock uboot for safe keeping, and try to flash in at least the improved LSProV2 image http://buffalo.nas-central.org/download ... bin.tar.gz ) to see if it works. It might be simple to just add in the definition of the kuropro's env vars at the end of the db88f5181.h file - using the buff109 source.

with these sources we really could create a universal enhanced uboot with netconsole added + maybe some predefined boot-commands + some simple scripts that setup the enviroment for the boxes. then a single binary would be enough.

Yes, and I think it will have to be the 1.1.4 sources (that they are using for the EZ?), since UBoot 1.1.4 has netconsole capability and 1.1.1 (the buff109 tarball sitting on jonli447's dir) doesn't.

They (Marvell) seems to stamp their reworkings w/ a Marvell Version ... 1.12.1 (from the buff109 sources) is what you have in the clipping from yamasita's site, and the Marvell Version 2.2.x (uboot 1.1.4) is what I got the rudimentary netconsole to work with.

Uboot 1.1.4 is the version that LNI built the PPC uboot for LS1 & LSHG with. I'm pretty sure that's the first version that had netconsole capability.



I am astounded that none of the other NAS hacking groups has any mention of the source - that it hasn't been asked for and received (at least as far as I've seen).

this is not meant to be a 'teaser', but rather just a visualization of what we would like to get working automatically and reliably...

the lower window is a minicom serial connection (active at boot) and the upper window is a netcat netconsole connection... at this point it is pretty much manual...

but... it's something to shoot for...

After waiting in vain for Buffalo to release their latest reworkings of the GPL source for UBoot 1.1.1 and 1.1.4 (called Marvell 1.7.3 and 2.2.4, resp.) I went ahead and took the older Buffalo109(UBoot 1.1.1) and used it ... patched it in on fresh vanilla UBoot 1.1.4 ... and then followed LNI's lead/directions and added in netconsole capability.

Done:
Netconsole works
Serial works
it boots the standard stockware (w/ uImage.buffalo & initrd.buffalo)
it boots foonas-em
it seems to be durable - have rebooted 15 or 20 times - always seems to come back up OK


To do:
tweak the serial portion a bit yet... would like to see the kernel boot log in either one window or the other...
quell the panicky buzzer
add in button control - maybe ... maybe not...
take out one of the two bootdelays...


if you have a minute or two you can watch this gif animation of the boot process, apologies for the length... :oops: ...
Image I still need to tweak the bootdelay ... and maybe one or two minor changes to improve the performance...

this is not a finished product, but I think it is getting pretty close now...

... a big thanks to bbradley, who gave me tips on the improved OpenOCD software, without which I would have been unable to unbrick my LSProV2 the 15 or so times I had to ... and timtimred's foonas-em which gave me something easy to boot into at the end, and had the fw_setenv/printenv commands in it so I could find and fix the last two errors...

well, I'm a the point I'd like to be able to install this (or any of the versions w/ improvements that will follow) whilst in Linux, w/ a dd command to a mtd ...

Has anyone been able to do this successfully w/ an LSPro or other ARM-ish LinkStation/Kuro?

I've done it many times w/ the KuroHG and LSHG, but never successfully w/ the LSProV2. (I tried once with - I think - the following commands, and it bricked it, so I had to jtag it then...)

confirmed.
this uboot works on my lspro v1.

but both this version and the stock v2 version will do another additional ext2_load to load initrd.buffalo from disk before it asks me to hit any key to swith to tftp mode.

tiamo, which uboot did you burn in? (we have three up, linked to...)

and on an LSProV1, right?

As far as we know, the V1 and V2 machines require (or at least prefer!) their respective U-Boots... of course, caution is advised here ... as is mentioned in the disclaimers... ;)

i have tried those 3 uboot firmwares.
both work.

my ls pro IS LSProV1,and i installed a serial cable.

stock uboot's version is "Marvell version: 1.10.8"

i flushed it with LSUpdater.exe using stock firmware 1.10 and forgot to uncheck UPDATE BOOT
then when LSPro boots,it shows "Marvell version: 1.12.1 - TINY"

yes.it works without problem,just an additional ext2_load before it ask me to hit any key to switch to tftp mode

so i think v2's stock uboot will also work with my LSProV1,then i tried the customized version
it also works without problem.but i did not try the netconsole.

v2 has more commands than v1.
there is a command named "shutdown" in v2,which does not exist in v1,but it seems that it does not work.

I rename those uboot with "u-boot.buffalo.updated",and use LSUpdater.exe to flush them into LSPro

all of them boot stock kernel + stock initrd(both v1 stock and v2 stock version)
all of them boot freelink kernel + freelink initrd
all of them boot kernel compiled using gpl source version 2.6.12 + freelink's initrd
all of them boot kernel compiled using gpl source version 2.6.16.16 + freelink's initrd or netboot initrd(in the kernel development board)

v2's stock kernel and gpl 2.6.16.16's kernel need modify /usr/local/sbin/kernelmon in the freelink's initrd(cat /proc/driver/kernevnt -> cat /proc/buffalo/kernevnt)

tiamo, thank you for your detailed answer and clear explanation :)

from my trials on a similar thread ( viewtopic.php?f=19&t=6281 ) I can tell you that the LSProV2 uboot in the LSProV1 machine seems to boot the stock firmware OK, but doesn't do well with changes to the env vars, so it is harder to get it to boot custom OS's like foonas, for instance.

I had been wondering about using the buffalo flasher to put these in, and your response shows that it seems to have worked for you... this is uncharted territory, but I guess a handful of us here (and you!) believed that it would work...

I can't remember using the U-Boot shutdown command (though I've seen it, yes) on the LSProV2, but if it works on the V2 but not on the V1, then that could mean that there is a significant hardware difference in one of the components (a controller chip?) somewhere... :?

the netconsole version is definitely not released yet, and I'd advise not using it... it is very pre-beta and still needs to undergo some more testing and development...

hmmm...

well, your proof is there, booting the stock-ish kernels and OS seem to not upset it and things seem to work OK ... and if I understand your post and logs correctly, your changing of env vars seems to go just fine as well, for you ...

When I saw problems with the reversion of env vars to original values, it was when I was making some large changes to bootcmd so I could boot foonas for lsarm http://foonas.org/index.php/Platforms:lsarm :

setenv bootcmd ext2load ide 1:1 0x00100000 /boot/uImage \; setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sda1 rw \; bootm 0x00100000
for instance would indeed change and I would saveenv, but it seemed to revert to the original bootcmd each time and not do what I was wanting it to do ... hmmm ... I saw a similar thing when I tried to change bootdelay to 10 for instance... I would change it to 10 seconds, saveenv , check it again (still at 10) then reboot and it would revert to 3 seconds. Close inspection of the UBoot code showed that Marvell had coded it to be set to 3, with persistence...

this is strange, but your post is clear and will make me think about it all some more ...
