Just flashed this em mode. Thanks Mindbender. Great work as usual.

anybody have any 2.4 uImage that supports flashing (writing to /proc/mtdblock1) ?

The 2.6 uImages I have don't seem to support it, and I don't have any 2.4 uImages that do, either. I only need to upgrade my firmimg.bin and my UBoot to 2.1.0.

My current uBoot doesn't seem to boot anything except explicit uImage format. It doesn't seem to be able to boot vmlinux.UBoot kernels.

Now I think I understand it.

Uboot 2.0.0 (or 2.0.1) expected its uImages to be titled uImage

netcat output show failure when that's not the case...
Code:
Loading 0:1:boot/uImage

** Unable to read "boot/uImage" from ide 0:1 **
## Booting image at ffc00000 ...

The newer U-Boot 2.1.0, which fixes some network behavior, etc., expects the title to be vmlinux.UBoot
and netcat output also shows complaints and failure to boot when not this title.

Code:
U-Boot 1.1.4 LiSt 2.1.0 (Nov 15 2006 - 18:03:28) LinkStation HG / KuroBox HG

Loading 0:1:boot/vmlinux.UBoot

** Unable to read "boot/vmlinux.UBoot" from ide 0:1 **

Is it the case that they both need it to be in uImage format, but 2.0.1 expects the name uImage while 2.1.0 expects name vmlinux.UBoot ?

from the netcat console type printenv. The kernel name is stored in the hdfile variable. It must be in uImage format.

Well done, mindbender. With your 2.4.33.3 v3 I was able to flash both the bootcode and the kernel+ramdisk .
Thanks!

Flashing the bootcode from Uboot 2.0 to Uboot 2.1.0 seems to have fixed my network issues completely, as well.

then my night session was a successful one, great it worked for you!

if there is a way to boost the write-speed to the flash with a slightly other config there might be a v4 of the kernel....

i will experiment a bit with the config.

it is the last thing i want to achieve. then the 2.4.33.3-kernel-work is completely done in my opinion and i can focus on the ramdisk built from scratch....

just4info: it looks like i can only support ext2/ext3 + XFS in EM Mode (kernel-modules for XFS + userspace apps for ext2/ext3 & XFS) as the XFS kernelmodule is large (about 500 kb)...i have to save space. xfs completely needs about 1,5 mb of the 10 i have available in total.

Speed? The firmimg.bin is about 3MB, right? It took a little over 1.5 minutes.

Code:
dd if=firmimg.bin of=/dev/mtdblock0 bs=1k
2921+1 records in
2921+1 records out
2991408 bytes transferred in 98.908546 seconds (30244 bytes/sec)

I didn't even have time to get to the refridgerator to get a beer!

Did it go much slower for you?

EDIT:
When I boot into EM mode & log in I don't see that nifty welcome message/panel you have posted above. Should I?

I also figured out what I was goofing up on w/ ftp-in files into hda1 & hda3. I have to put the files only where there is enough space and where operator has permissions. (...duuuuhhhh...)

Now I am able to rebuild my FreeLink system this week, with about 3 or 4 GB for hda1. Whatever goes wrong, I probably won't even have to open up the case (only if HD or PSU die).

Great work!.

then there might be a difference between this 2 commands:

Code:
dd if=firmimg.bin of=/dev/mtdblock0 bs=1k

and
Code:
cat firmimg.bin > /dev/mtdblock0

i always use the second one....

BUT: i just tested the dd-variant...
Code:
root@LINKSTATION:/mnt/ls_config/DEVELOPMENT/FLASH-IMAGE/UBOOT# time dd if=firmimg.bin of=/dev/mtdblock0 b
s=1k

2901+1 records in
2901+1 records out

real    7m7.634s
user    0m0.000s
sys     0m9.410s

it seems that this issue is only on my LS1...maybe because it uses a different flash device?

anyway...it seems that i cannot use a different kernel config...and it is ok for me that it is slow on the LS1 as long it is stable and working. UBoot + firmimg.bin won`t be flashed very often....when i am finished then it only has to be done once by every user....and that is ok in my opinion...

hmm. yes you should, but i haven`t tested it as i said.
i was to sleepy to stand up, configure my desktop to a static 192.168.11.x-ip to be able to reach the LS while in EM Mode....reboot the LS and get it into EM Mode...

did you see that welcome message with the former telnet/ftp-enabled firmimg.bins?

the "welcome message" is the content of /etc/issue, and it should be shown before the "login:"-prompt.

do you only get the login prompt?

i know that the former versions worked.

I see this (this is on an HG)...
Code:
telnet 10.0.1.9
Trying 10.0.1.9...
Connected to 10.0.1.9.
Escape character is '^]'.
Password:
Login incorrect

HD-HGLAN-EM login: root

BusyBox v0.60.5 (2003.07.30-12:03+0000) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

# exit

If I use

telnet -l root 10.0.1.9

I get essentially the same - no welcome message.

As far as the nuts & bolts go, EM mode is a hit. I am now installing freelink on an old, old 2GB West Digital hard drive, w/ partitons 1GB, .5GB, .4GB , just to see how it handles.

I see the splash screen. It flashed in under a minute on my Kuro. MAybe we want to look into storing more initrd stuff in the other remaining flash locations such as moving the u-boot environment to fff40000 and also usint the status block, etc. We could gain an additional 700 k by doing so.
