hello NAS folk,

I have an LS220DE hooked up in my living room. The other night I was forced to spend the night on the couch (word to the wise, women are always right....just trust me), I noticed my NAS was making a ton of noise. The harddrive was being accessed a lot but I wasn't running anything. All computers on my network were turned off. I then unplugged the network cable and that didn't stop the noise.

I've heard of people installing malware on printers and unpatched routers. Has anyone heard of successful attacks on the LS where they are able to install malware that is accessing my HD?

We recently installed one NAS drive (Buffalo LinkStation Pro Duo, LS-WVL, running the most recent Firmware version 1.6 to be precise) in our (small) company network. Currently, there is no encryption and by default the NAS provides anonymous read-write acess via samba. Setting up user/group restrictions is no problem with the web interface, nor is deactivating the integrated media server etc., but encryption is not officially available.
