All the actions you do on your own risk!

From source Debian Wheezy on LinkStation LS421DE

Downgrade firmware Buffalo to 1.33 version.

Detach the FIRST (sda) hard disk from LinkStation and attach it to Ubuntu box.

Code:
$ sudo fdisk -l

determine the name of the disk, then it will be called sdX

Code:
$ sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends mdadm

$ sudo mdadm --assemble --scan

$ sudo mdadm --stop /dev/md0
$ sudo mdadm --stop /dev/md1
$ sudo mdadm --stop /dev/md2
$ sudo mdadm --stop /dev/md101

$ sudo mdadm --remove /dev/md0
$ sudo mdadm --remove /dev/md1
$ sudo mdadm --remove /dev/md2
$ sudo mdadm --remove /dev/md101

$ sudo mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sdX1
$ sudo mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sdX2
$ sudo mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sdX5
$ sudo mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sdX6

$ sudo mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdX1
$ sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdX2
$ sudo mkswap /dev/sdX5
$ sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdX6

$ mkdir /tmp/sda1
$ sudo mount /dev/sdX1 /tmp/sda1
$ mkdir /tmp/sda2
$ sudo mount /dev/sdX2 /tmp/sda2

Download archive sda1sda2.tar.gz
Code:
$ sudo -i
# cd /home/[user]/Downloads
# tar -xf sda1sda2.tar.gz
# cp ME/sda1/* /tmp/sda1
# cp -r ME/sda2/* /tmp/sda2

Attach back the disk to LinkStation in FIRST position.

network interface uses DHCP
Code:
cat /etc/network/interfaces
# interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8)
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Login: root
Password: root

Boot via Serial Console
Code:
BootROM 1.08
Booting from SPI flash
DDR3 Training Sequence - Ver 2.3.5
DDR3 Training Sequence - Ended Successfully
BootROM: Image checksum verification PASSED

I do not know, but LS400 and LS200 uses Marvell Armada 370. https://tohenk.wordpress.com/2014/11/12 ... mment-3184
Most likely, to install a new kernel after Debian, you will need to make a rollback to the firmware released earlier in 2015

In firmwares v1.01-1.34 LS400 series uses U-Boot 2009.08-svn ( 4月 09 2013 - 19:15:41)Marvell version: 1.1.3 NQ, in v1.80-1.83 uses U-Boot 2011.12 (Jan 15 2015 - 21:22:47) Marvell version: v2011.12 2014_T2.0p1.
Second version U-Boot not comptable with network interface (mvneta) in vanilla kernel.

hi, Antonas.
I've followed every step you provided carefully with LS421DE. However the NAS started with blinking white light and I can't ping it.
The NAS used to be on firmware 1.81 and has 2 disk in raid 1. I re-flashed firmware 1.33 with a single spare hard drive just to try out.
Could you explain why you uses eth0 in network interface settings while the original post from Toha's Blog uses eth1?
And what do you mean "restore ENV settings". I thought by re-flashing firmware everything should be set back to factory default. Or am I missing something?

Maybe you could give more detailed explanation about your instructions. Like is it in raid or single disk? What's in those files you provided?

I don't have the cable to access Serial Console so I can't debug bootloading.

Vanilla kernel version 4xxx use only eth0, in your router must be binded a MAC address buffalo, or edit file in archive sda2/etc/network/interfaces through Ubuntu machine.

If you have not previously used a serial console for editing ENV settings, you can simply rollback the firmware.

My instruction in first post, download last my bootstraping Debian Stretch9.1 with new kernel 4.12.14 from previous my post, insert both discs into the device and flash it with official firmware not higher v1.34.
After that, you can not format the disks on them in sections sda(b)4 located GRUB. On Ubuntu machine you need deactivated all raid on disks md0/md1 etc., create file systems on partition and copy file from my archive to sda1 and sda2. All operation make with FIRST disk.

If it works, then you are mistaken in Toha instruction...

p.s. Buffalo firmware always uses Raid even if you use an JBOD for LS420/421

"insert both discs into the device and flash it with official firmware not higher v1.34."
So why do I need to insert "both disks" to re-flash the firmware? Is it supposed to set some value at bootloader to recognize two disks instead of one? At the moment I only have one spare disk to experiment with this.
I think I've followed your instruction as closely as possible but still ended up having a unpingable device.

The only difference is instead of /dev/md0, /dev/md1, /dev/md2, /dev/md101, the command "sudo fdisk -l" shows /dev/md124, /dev/md125, /dev/md126, /dev/md127
and "sudo cp ME/sda2/* /tmp/sda2" notices me omitting directories, so I replace it with "sudo cp -r ME/sda2/* /tmp/sda2"

So it should be, when installing the official firmware on only one disk, delete these raid md124-127 and create filesystem on sda1,2,5,6
Code:
                 JBOD
first disk sda        second disk sdb
sda1           md0          sdb1
sda2           md1          sdb2
sda5           md2          sdb5
sda6   md101        md102   sda6

buffalo use always raid

you did the right thing

2ig2ag Debian started?

Sadly, no. Blinking light and unpingable device. I checked my router and it's not in device list.

First start vanilla kernel takes about 5-10 minutes, I'm not a professional, in the Serial Console there are multiple messages

something like this XXXXXXXXXXXXX partitions on "pxa3xx_nand-0" I cut these messages out from "Boot via Serial Console" on the first post, there were 3-4 pages

it was just one, I forgot to write about it.

well, try running a Debian stetch with a buffalo kernel 3.3.4

if Debian start, install Vanilla kernel 4.12.14 by Toha instruction or on Ubuntu machine copy/replace from archive ls-kernel-4.12.14.tar.gz file /boot/ulmage.buffalo to sda1 and folder /lib/modules/4.12.14-ls421de/ to sda2/lib/modules/

p.s. for buffalo kernel need use eth1, check and correct on Ubuntu machine file sda2/etc/network/interfaces

I've tried your new kernel 3.3.4 files and changed network interface to eth1.
Still the same: blinking light and unpingable device.

when copying files to sda1 and sda2 messages appear "Permission denied"? If they are present, you need use root account, run command on Ubuntu machine:
Code:
$ sudo -i

p.s. at first boot, do not insert the second disc

No such messages. And I only inserted the first disk.
