Hi guys,

It seems that the mppe kernel module lined on the PPTP VPN on Stock FW wiki isn't for kernel 2.6.31.8. Searching this forum I have found that kenatonline has compiled it for such kernel, but after deploying such kernel module, I'm having the following error:

Nov 3 00:57:15 NAS modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting ppp_mppe (/lib/modules/2.6.
31.8/kernel/drivers/net/ppp_mppe.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown param
eter (see dmesg)
Nov 3 00:57:15 NAS pppd[891]: MPPE required, but kernel has no support.
Nov 3 00:57:15 NAS kernel: ppp_mppe: disagrees about version of symbol ppp_regi
ster_compressor
Nov 3 00:57:15 NAS kernel: ppp_mppe: Unknown symbol ppp_register_compressor
Nov 3 00:57:15 NAS kernel: ppp_mppe: disagrees about version of symbol ppp_unre
gister_compressor
Nov 3 00:57:15 NAS kernel: ppp_mppe: Unknown symbol ppp_unregister_compressor

Could someone please point me what I have done wrong?

Thanks.

Your kernel has no MPPE support compiled in. So the module itself seems to
be not enough. You need a kernel with basic MPPE support.

Hi kenatonline,

How could I install such kernel? I think the 1.31 firmware has a compatible kernel, but I'm now running 1.60mod.

Cheers.

Compile your own from the Buffalo source for your firmware version.
You can find the sources at Buffalos site.

Hi kenatoonline,

Thanks for your answer. Is the guide on this wiki entry still valid? Sorry for the questions, but I'm as familiar to this procedure as I'd like to be.

Cheers.

The toolchain could be something newer.
You can also have a look at this guide:
http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Building_a_kernel_from_Buffalos_source
for some more informations.
Maybe both together will give you enough infos to compile the
kernel yourself.
