I just had the opportunity to use Foonas-EM, (to replace the native Kuro-Pro flash OS that I had corrupted - thanks Timtimred) I like it quite alot. However I was thinking, it sure would be nice to have some sort of feature in the web interface to pick and reboot into an OS that was on the hard drive. In essence rewriting uboot variables and rebooting, using is as a interface for the bootloader: uboot.

And then of course you'd probably want the corresponding script and fw_printenv /fw_setenv for the OS in question to switch back.

Thanks ramuk :)

After purchasing a couple of Thecus N1200s this month team foonas is working on a new kernel for the N1200. The stock kernel by the manufacturer uses the old arch/ppc stuff, and the version of U-boot on the device is too old to support booting newer powerpc kernels directly (it is a pre-device tree aware version of U-boot).

The new support we hope to provide soon is based on arch/powerpc and uses a wrapper (cuboot-83xx) to get around the old bootloader. Currently we have this kernel (2.6.25.9 currently) booting an old powerpc version of foonas directly from the hard disk!

We do however need to do some more work to get mini-pci, ethernet and possibly some other bits working. We also need to get around a limitation that is currently preventing us from booting an initramfs. Watch this space :)

Some evidence:

as in ... viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2472&p=37706&#p37706 ...

I would like to run a test of the fix that I applied to collectd's build ... won't know if its good until I test it, I guess... :|

Alas kaiten never finished/submitted this - maybe he still has this kicking about.

We are going to give a major rework to foonas after foonas-iscsi is done, i'd hold off further dev on the foonas webif since we are probably going to tear its heart out :)

I do have this kicking about in one of my boxes, Alas, the box in question is in the attic. Still don't have a working house :( Building still in progress.

However I did find some remnants of the webpage on one of my backup disks.

Code:
#!/usr/bin/openlink-page
<?
. /usr/lib/webif/webif.sh

header "Status" "Graphs" "@TR<<System Graphs>>" '' "$SCRIPT_NAME"

if empty "$FORM_graph_type"; then
  FORM_graph_type="cpu"
fi

INFOSTRING0="string|<div class=\"settings\"><img src=\"/images/rrd/$FORM_graph_type-hour.png\" alt=\"$FORM_graph_type per Hour\"/><br /><br />"

But as timtim said, as I remember webif needs a bid overhaul. I'll look through some more of my disks & see what I can find.

Gettting close to a new foonas-em release with lots of new features. Here is how its shaping up (subject to change):

0.1.1 changes:

* The ftpd is now bftpd instead of vsftpd - much smaller (as recommended by davygravy)
* Starts up 1s faster (due to removed hacks for vsftpd in startup)
* Alpha suport for Thecus N1200 (PowerPC MPC8347) and HP MV2120 (Orion)
* Upgraded to e2fsprogs 1.41.3 - has ext4 utils (we dont supply kernel support for this yet)
* Automatically uses swap partitions on any attached disks it finds on boot
* On platforms with the lvm, we now detect and activate lvm volumes on boot
* Linux 2.6.27.5 for all orion platforms and powerpc linkstations
* Updated to busybox 1.21.1
- Uses smaller modutils implementation that now includes all the utils per platform
* Updated LVM and device-mapper packages to latest versions
* 404 and 403 errors via webif now have custom error pages that redirect back to the admin interface
* blkid from e2fsprogs is now included by default on all platforms
* swap is now swapoff on shutdown
* Web interface is now generally faster (removed some patches & other bits that slowed it down)
* dmeventd is included on platforms with device mapper
* New online distro installer scripts are more simple. One smaller script instead of three per distro
* All daemons stopped cleanly on shutdown/halt/reboot (apart from some platform specific ones)
* All daemons now use start-stop-daemon
* 100% of content now supplied in english, german, norwegian or spanish (two other languages possibly coming for this release too)
* Howl support for most platforms (this may be removed in future versions on a specific device if for example, the kernel/libc/other core package gets bigger and can not fit in flash anymore even fits on lsppc and lsmipsel so far). We use howl because it is a lot smaller than avahi for what we need despite the fact it is not maintained.

Current Pending Issues:

* Some extra minor localisation work
* qcontrol support for mv2120 & n1200
* lsmipsel foonas-em appears to not boot properly
* Testing :) (yep, we test)
* Rewrite all existing online installers using new format
* Get the rest of the norwegian localisation from NAiL
* Cant localise 403, 404 pages currently (when a script used by an actual error is called it does not allow it to run as a cgi, just html however call script directly and it works - busybox limitation)
* Be nice to auto redirect after 3 seconds when clicked yes on set language

What would it take to get this working on the terastation units (original PPC or newer ARM)?

Any chance, or no chance?

Thanks,

Not 100% sure, but may just a box in timtimred's collection (a developer needs to have a box in hand usually to make it supported), or an owner of a box willing to work w/ timtimred in order to get it supported...

any update regarding foonas/foonas-em/foonas-scsi ?

my LS1 runs foonas for a few months now without any glitches.

Yes - I got openembedded access recently and have been working on stuff upstream for a bit. My plan is to do a foonas-em release sometime soon still after a bit of more tinkering upstream and then merge some more. I have a personal atom project I'm doing atm which is eating into time too :)

It is likely that foonas-em and foonas-iscsi will become a distro in openembedded and foonas will become an image based on angstrom, which benefits everyone by giving you all more up to date packages for the main distro that more people are working on. I've done a lot of work for this already - the devices are already upstream and all the important packages are transferred over/updated too.

Using openembedded git instead of the foonas fork is better atm for your own projects too, thinking about competitions etc... ;)

Any idea when a new version of FooNAS-EM will be available?

I've installed the latest version @ downloads.foonas.org (0.1.0-r2). Its very nice.

I would like to see a version which used linux kernel 2.6.34 or later. These kernels have improved support for Advanced Format hard disks (with 4K sectors).

Keep up the good work!

My ubuntu instalation died, and how I'm trying to deboostrap ubutnu again.

But, foonas-em doesn't support 'ar' - and that, along with wget and chroot are required.

I'm desperately trying to build a new foonas-em with support for ar. but I've been unable to ... The build instructions look out dated and they don't work for me.

It looks like it take more actions to properly configure bitbake.

If anyone could help me building foonas-em .... I'd appreciate!
