Hi people,
As you are probably aware by now I've been working on getting Open Embedded working for HG & HD linkstations (and eventually LS Pros and others!) for a few weeks now, and im glad to say most of the initial slog is complete, the images have been booting on my HG Linkstation and Kurobox for a week or so now (thanks to mindbender for the plug in the news).

Last weekend I uploaded it into our sourceforge svn area and updated the howto to use this instead. The status of this in SVN is mostly working with brief periods of breakage. If you have developer access the required uboot version and a filesystem image are in the protected download area.

* edit - these have been moved elsewhere ... read on (its on page 3) *

I have also tested using OE to generate ipkg feeds with our distribution and this worked great. When this launches there will already be a well populated ipkg feed to suck precompiled packages from.

Right now I need a beta tester with a HD linkstation and/or kuro with a JTAG cable to test the HD side of things. Any volunteers? When this is working on both HD and HG we will make a beta release available to collect bugs and work towards an initial proper release.

Thanks!

i just finished removing the solder to realize that i need to buy the headers....the old ones that i had left were broken.

i will get some now...

i besides will try it without voltage first. on the LS pro it also works without.

the usb cables you made only need Tx, Rx, and Ground. You should try bridging R76 and leaving r75 as is. I suspect it will work for 2-way serial if you do it.

well...serial does not work....i somehow damaged my serial a little Laughing

but as i am getting some replacement boxes with 5 flash-problem i think i might soon have a replacement.

here is what i see every few minutes in my netconsole while trying to boot the latest build:

U-Boot 1.2.0 (Feb 22 2007 - 23:31:58) LinkStation / KuroBox
stdin : nc
stdout: nc
stderr: nc
IDE: Bus 0: OK
Device 0: Model: Maxtor 6B250R0 Firm: BAH41B70 Ser#: B60T7VWH
Type: Hard Disk
Supports 48-bit addressing
Capacity: 239372.4 MB = 233.7 GB (490234752 x 512)
Boot in 01 seconds ('s' to stop)...
Loading 0:1:boot/uImage

1670638 bytes read

2346 bytes read
## Booting image at 00800000 ...
Image Name: Linux-2.6.21-rc2
Image Type: PowerPC Linux Kernel Image (gzip compressed)
Data Size: 1670574 Bytes = 1.6 MB
Load Address: 00000000
Entry Point: 00000000
Verifying Checksum ... OK
Uncompressing Kernel Image ... OK
Booting using flat device tree at 0x7f0000

is this normal UBoot behaviour to reboot every few minutes when it did not work?

anyway....i either need serial or someone else needs to verify that the bundled kernel works at all on the LS1/kuro.

tested it with a kernel provided by tampakuro which is known to work:

U-Boot 1.2.0 (Feb 22 2007 - 23:31:58) LinkStation / KuroBox
stdin : nc
stdout: nc
stderr: nc
IDE: Bus 0: OK
Device 0: Model: Maxtor 6B250R0 Firm: BAH41B70 Ser#: B60T7VWH
Type: Hard Disk
Supports 48-bit addressing
Capacity: 239372.4 MB = 233.7 GB (490234752 x 512)
Boot in 01 seconds ('s' to stop)...
Loading 0:1:boot/uImage

1539097 bytes read

2346 bytes read
## Booting image at 00800000 ...
Image Name: Linux-2.6.20-rc3
Image Type: PowerPC Linux Kernel Image (gzip compressed)
Data Size: 1539033 Bytes = 1.5 MB
Load Address: 00000000
Entry Point: 00000000
Verifying Checksum ... OK
Uncompressing Kernel Image ... OK
Booting using flat device tree at 0x7f0000

same behaviour....reboots every 5 minutes or so....seems like the good old watchdog that interrupts the hanging loading process

tampakuro told me that it is possible to add support for netconsole in the kernel?

what about that approach?

The kernel in the OE build already has netconsole support which should be preconfigured to work, however normally I've found I only see the output to this if I am plugged into the same switch - if you have eg a wifi router plugged into a switch then you are lucky to catch the end of the netconsole kernel output....

so....i plugged the LS in the same switch and saw only the UBoot-messages.

IP of my listening workstation: 192.168.1.100

is there something to configure the ip of the nc-server in the kernel? or should it just send out via multicast?

uboot should have been preconfigured to pass the right arguments so that a your workstation at 192.168.1.100 should get all the messages.

Someone could check the kernel .config in OE. I think I put it in packages/linux/linkstationppc/defconfig

Can you also type printenv in uboot and post this somewhere please.... thanks!

That looks fine. I dont remember seeing ethact in my list of variables but this shouldnt matter (should it?) anyone else spot anything wrong with this?

Can someone with a HD linkstation can verify that the kernel config is right (I have checked a couple of times) also can someone see anything wrong with the uboot config above? Looks fine to me...

Failing this I still need a beta tester with a HD linkstation/kuro and serial/JTAG access please...

actually after untaring openlink 0.73b on the hdd again i realize a difference.
some seconds after i see "loading the kernel" ->
OpenLink 0.73b: disc activity
OE -Openlink-LS1/kuro: nothing...CPU resets after 5 minutes and restart.
