I'm looking for guidance here. I've found Buffalo Tech's firmware slow, inconsistent results with ACL, and I don't want to be dependent on their proprietary RAID either. So, I've answered my own question "Which firmware for the Quad?" viewtopic.php?f=66&t=20653. So you know your audience I would have to say I am an odd hybrid of "Extreme Techie" and a "Newbie". Despite the fact my computer experience goes back to 1973, programming a Monroebot XI using a manual punch to punch hex machine language into 10-channel paper tape, and I currently run Ubuntu on my core i7 920 workstation, I have no real Linux/Unix expertise. I can be well versed in the esoterics while clueless about the Linux/Unix basics and 'How to'.

So my first step is to identify what I want to put on my LS Quad.

Functionality/Modules
--------------------------------
  • Kernel
  • smartmontools....SMARTdrive monitoring
  • NoFlush.............Drive Spindown
  • LVM?.................Maybe not, I'm starting with 4 x 1.5TB drives and FileZILLA should let me transfer RAID partition w/data to a larger drive/partition.
  • Samba......\........Network Shares, that's the whole point isn't it?
  • NFS........../
  • coreutils.....\
  • python........ \......General utility need
  • ncurses......./
  • nano........../
  • telnetd...............Have to log in somehow
  • tftpd..................Don't want to end up with a brick.
  • Deluge...............What's your BitTorrent preference? Really like uTorrent, but alas no Unix version.
  • apache..........\...For Deluge UI and possibly other things.
  • deluge-webui../
  • xrdp.....\
  • libvnc.....\..........Remote desktop, alternative to telnet and apache (deluge-webui)
  • librdp....../
  • sesman./
