I have purchased Linkstation pro recently and interested in webaccess from internet. I have put the linkstation in "AUTO" mode and it goes to sleep often and I am not able to access it from internet. I would need suggestions if modding with a custom firmware helps resolve this issue. Plz advise me on options & procedure on this ?

PS: I am using a Router based to Tomato Firmware to connect Linkstation.

Why don't you put the LS Pro in Manual Mode / On Mode? Auto Mode is used for LAN WOL only.

Currently, as far as I've known, most of router doesn't allow WOL packet go through with broadcasting IP address. Hence we have to perform WOL inside LAN the network, not from WAN. It's not the problem from NAS, it's network-related thing.

Linkstation can run 24/7 without problem, you can turn it to ON Mode.

Your problem is, that noone sends WOL pakets to the LS to get/keep it alive.
Either follow NASNAS advise or implement somthing on your router which
sends WOL pakets to the LS when you connect from internet (e.g. a web site
on your router with a button which starts a script to send WOL pakets to the
LS every three minutes and another button which kills the script again).
Nevertheless you do NOT have a problem with your firmware but with your
understanding how the "auto"-mode on LS works.

If there is no verified backup of a dataset, the dataset, by definition, is unimportant. (c't 2012)

Thanks for suggestions. I have found out that "Ether-wake" which is used in WOL of tomato firmware, does not work with Buffalo NAS as it uses Magic packet in OSI layer 2 and does not use UDP.
WOL implementation in DD-WRT which uses wol binary can be used to wake up NAS. I am trying to now fiugre out how to bring this to tomato ....
PS: Keeping it in ON mode, make the HDD spin continously. Does it not reduce the life span of HDD ?
