My LS420D (4TB+4TB in RAID-1) gets so degraded after many hours into the RAID scanning.. file access is nearly impossible. The admin web page comes up, but I cannot even login - it just times out. I cannot even shut it down using the switch at the back. I have the latest firmware.

I get maintenance messages saying there are no disk errors. I have pulled out the disks and checked them offline on a PC using CrystalDiskInfo program and everything seems fine.

Since it takes about 48 hours or more to complete the RAID scan, the NAS becomes toally useless this period. I can cancel the raid scan only only by pulling the power plug since the switch does not work. Everything is fine once I power cycle to cancel the RAID scan.

I pulled out each disk in the RAID1 array and then rebuilt the RAID - took about 2 days each. But I still have the same problem. I did not experience this extreme degradation while rebuilding the array.

I do not understand how RAID scanning which should be a background process interferes with other normal operations to such a large extent.

I would like to roll back the firmware and see if this fixes the issue - but I do not know where to get older versions of the firmware.

Any help will be sincerely appreciated.

If you move a drive out, this drive will be market as demaged.
You will get no raid scanning, you will get raid rebuilding.
All Data from one drive will be written on the other drive.
This is no backgroundprocess.

This is no Terastation.

You can try to use it as TS1200 and test this rebuild again.
Maybe on this firmware it is better

I have downgraded the Firmware from version 1.81 to 1.34.
I have started a RAID scan manually.

We'll see what happens.. (it will take 36 hours or more to complete).

Checked after about 72 hours after downgrading to firmware 1.34. Problem still exists - device is practically inaccessible after a few hours of starting RAID scan, which makes the device useless. I am going to disable the RAID scan completely, and move to a different NAS. Disappointed.
