I used wdidle3 /D which set 62 mins
I tried setting higher but it seems 62 mins is the max
it should fix it as linux is touching the drive atleast twice a min

well done buffalo

Unfortunately this is a known problem with LS-XHL and WD drives.
Discovered this one or two years ago and switched to a LS-VL
for the "daily work" therefore.
Buffalos support denied a problem that time and pointed out that I
am still under warranty with the box and IF it fails, it will be replaced,
but not in advance.
They did not mentioned what happens, if the box fails outside the
warranty period.
That time, someone posted a small script, which accessed the box
once within 4 seconds to avoid the parking of the heads.

So the problem is not specific to you, but to all owners of LS-XHLs
with a WD drive.

I realise its not specific to me
hence the post to remind people to check if they have a wd drive in theyr nas

I have known about the 8 second park of wd drives for years
but presumed buffalo where bright enough to disable it before fitting the drives

It seems not

tbh im surprised my drive has lasted 2.1 million parks
it cant have many left in it

Rofl. ;-)
Do you believe in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy as well? ;-)))

At least you, with all the problems you certainly have when building
your firmware images, should know, that Buffalo hired some students
(and that are NOT computer science students, of course) to quality check
their software and their manager is one of these excel addicts whithout
any contact point to the real world, not to speak about any reasonable
level of "high quality standard".

Enough bashing; you are right to point to this possible problem.
Lets hope the disk will not fail soon.

86257 Parks in 9104 Hours = 0,15 Parks/min

The HDD parks every 6 min.

Is this to much? I think so.

I have solved it with idle3 http://idle3-tools.sourceforge.net/

Code:
cd /tmp
ipkg install gcc gunzip
ln -s /opt/bin/gcc  /usr/bin/cc
wget  http://switch.dl.sourceforge.net/project/idle3-tools/idle3-tools-0.9.1.tgz
gunzip idle3-tools-0.9.1.tgz
tar xvf *.tar
cd idle3-tools-0.9.1
make
./idle3ctl -g /dev/sda

Quote:
Idle3 timer set to 80 (0x50)

Code:
./idle3ctl -d /dev/sda

Quote:
Idle3 timer disabled
Please power cycle your drive off and on for the new setting to be taken into account. A reboot will not be enough!

Verify after PowerOFF
Code:
./idle3ctl -g /dev/sda
Idle3 timer is disabled
