you can use acp_commander to spawn telnet.
http://buffalo.nas-central.org/download ... COMMANDER/

replacing the kernel should be possible...kernel sources are there and you would need to install the codesourcery toolchain to compile it.
http://opensource.buffalo.jp/ls-lgl-103.html -> http://buffalo.jp/php/los.php?to=gpl/st ... .10.tar.gz

question is if you need to install a different kernel...it might be enough to install the optware feed.
-> viewtopic.php?p=39162#p39162

if you run into some networking or to be more exact DNS problems (you can ping IPs in the inet but not via dns, 2 guys ran into that problem before and fixed this by adding the nas-central.org IP to /etc/hosts) then "maybe" a replacement kernel could fix this.

hope this helps.

Isn't that kernel link the wrong version? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the linkstation mini LS-WSGL and not LS-LGL?

This should be the right link? http://opensource.buffalo.jp/ls-wsgl-100.html Or are both correct? (the same?)

edit: heh, lots of question marks for the newbie :)
