Hello everybody,

I own a WSGL for few days now and try to understand how to implement toorent service on it. I'm quite lost on the solutions proposed here and dont really understand which is the easier way to get it. what I know :

- I have FW 1.06 original from buffalo (i did not modify it at all)
- Transmission or any other torrent client is not on this version of firmware
- New 1.56 firmware has it but does not seem to be installable on my device (if I understand well it's for new version of mimi)
- I use to have transmission on a linux computer with remote on windows ones it works well so I have preference for it (anyway I don't want to be closed to that if there is another solution)

Seems for me two possibilities to get torrent :
-First is to upgrade to 1.56 but is it possible ?
-Second is to install transmission package on my current firmware
-Third to change firmware to openlink or freelink

I would prefer first or second option, from what i understand with third one i will lost webGUI and seems risky and complicated.

So my question(s!) are :

- Which is the best way to get torrent on this device ?
- Where can I find information to do that ?
- What is Open stock firmware ?

Thanks in advance for the time you'll spend for a noob (me)

Thomas

Option three is:

Installing Debian as described here will give you the greatest amount of freedom: http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Ins ... ation_Mini

Ok for a Debian distro seems really full as you can manage Nas as any computer but from what I saw, Buffalo stock firmware is not so bad for a home use (actually managing users, media server,... works fine and can be explained easily to guests at home) so I think I will just open the stock firmware using the dedicated wiki page and install (via ipkg) transmission daemon and manage torrent downloads via WebGUI of transmission and/or transmission-remote-gui (even if not having this ported on windows is an issue for 1 computer in the house).

Do you have some feedback on this kind of modification are there any precaution to have doing this or following the Open stock firmware & transmission wiki pages is enough and without troubles and works fine and will get me happy !?

Thanks anyway for your help

I have never used "Itsee" (ipkg) but its very popular, so should work well enough for you.
And I'm sure someone else will be able to help if you can't work it out by searching the forums and wiki.

BTW: for windows there is a transmission thick client written in C#:
http://code.google.com/p/transmission-remote-dotnet/

and a simple client for android, that works well enough too:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neogb.rtac&hl=en

Good luck!
Stonie.

I followed the instructions of openstockfirmware wiki page > Works & I have telnet working and starting at boot
I installed IPKG and add optware feed > Works
I list transmission packages from optware > gives 2 versions (from my mind 1.4x and 2.5x)
I install first one, configure RPC parameters to allow any IP > can connect to <NASIP>:9091 but only have black text on white page with no link at all (the text is not an error message, its clearly from transmission :"upload limit 50 100 150...")
then I uninstall and install second one : same results

For both transmission remote gui refuses to connect to daemon saying 'connection refused'
For the webGui I tried to copy all webserver files from a ubuntu install to the same directory on the nas but it did not change anything.

Has anyone an idea ?

I will now try to document myself on rtorrent maybe loading a web graphical interface is too heavy for this little machine...

Check the RPC section of:
Code:
 nano /etc/transmission-daemon/settings.json

Mine looks like this :
Code:
    "rpc-authentication-required": false,
    "rpc-bind-address": "0.0.0.0",
    "rpc-enabled": true,
    "rpc-password": "{31f3275b7bf8577b6c4110972e62b7f6bf44a434gp57C5p1",
    "rpc-port": 9091,
    "rpc-username": "nasuser",
    "rpc-whitelist": "127.0.0.1",
    "rpc-whitelist-enabled": false,

there are a couple of different ways to set this up, Check here for the full listing of options: https://trac.transmissionbt.com/wiki/EditConfigFiles

I will have to disagree with you on that. a bit of html and javascript is nothing to worry about. Plenty enough power even on my PPC Kuro HG @ 266 MHz & 128MB of ram. ;)

Good luck,
Stonie.

(Maybe the question deviates from the subject sorry for that)

Is there any possibility to upgrade the firmware of my WSGL to the firmware of a WSXL (which includes torrent and web servers) are they really different ?

I will check settings.json but from my mind mine is quite similar

double check your settings, make sure you create a user. (running as root is a bad idea and may be causing issues if you are attempting that)
have a read on the transmission wiki for headless boxes, should work out for you.

You better read the forum rules.. those questions have legal ramifications and wont be answered. sorry. :|

It's a better idea to install Debian then you can do what you like. ;)

I used transmission-daemon -f to see what is happening in 'real time'. actually transmission seems to be working but it writes aborted when :

I try to connect via webgui (nasip:9091)
I try to connect via transmission-remote-gui

Does someone knows the reason of this crash or if there is a log file explaining crash reason?

try
Code:
transmission-daemon -a *.*.*.*

check with
Code:
ps aux |grep transmi

Code:
root@nas:~# ps aux|grep transmi
root     30212 33.7 11.6  49248 28928 ?        Ssl  11:01   0:04 transmission-daemon -a *.*.*.*
root     30393  0.0  0.2   3364   592 pts/0    S+   11:01   0:00 grep transmi
root@nas:~#

if this works you have to coorect your settings.json

"rpc-whitelist": "*.*.*.*",
"rpc-whitelist-enabled": true,

I followed trac.transmissionbt.com FAQ page (https://trac.transmissionbt.com/wiki/NAS) this worked and I now have the Web GUI working and remote too !

But new problem appears :
I configured settings.json to download in /mnt/array1/Media/Torrents (directories I created by the buffalo web interface)
When I start a download, transmission download at 8.8kb/s and no more (I tried the same 2MB file with another computer on the same network it downloads at 1.4 MB/s)
after download complete the file does not appear in the specified directory
can it be a user permissions problem, as I launch transmission as root i suppose it cannot be ?
