Guys,

I’m keen to get gentoo on my new Kurobox pro, what’s the best approach?
What is the status of Genlink for the kuro pro?
This article on the wiki seems to be LS Pro specific?: http://buffalo.nas-central.org/index.php/GenLink
I assume it must be much the same for the KuroPro?

If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great.

Cheers,
Stonie.

You could follow the instructions for

The Freelink Automatic Install
http://buffalo.nas-central.org/index.ph ... ic_Install
or
The Freelink Manual Install
http://buffalo.nas-central.org/index.ph ... al_install

But use the Genlink distribution tarball instead of the debian/Freelink tarball contained in the Freelink distribution package
http://downloads.nas-central.org/LSPro_ ... s/Genlink/

I did this when I first got my KuroPro last year, and I had lots of difficulties, some of which is because the Genlink distro is a little broken, and some of which is my general inexperience with Gentoo. YMMV

Thanks for this Ramuk, can you or anyone else elaborate on this comment:

“>Genlink distro is a little broken”

I’m an avid Gentoo fan, and pretty keen to stick with it. I have two HGs running like a dream with Gentoo. (Granted they are a mature platform)
I was hoping for a simular end result with my Pro. But I’m not a total masochist, how broken is Genlink?

Cheers,
Stonie.

I too am a Gentoo fan (Use it on my desktop machine) but I pulled my hair out trying to get genlink up reliably on the Kuropro. I finally settled on Freelink and am quite content. I would like to see a more generic Gentoo arm stage3 that could be put onto the Kuropro. As it is with Genlink as soon as you try to emerge -uvDN world you run into too many problems to seriously debug. That and the Genlink rootfs has some funky workarounds to accommodate the Linkstation (which is what it was made for initially.)

I'd say for someone that has the time and technical skills to compile a vanilla Gentoo arm stage 1-2-3 (By vanilla I mean without any of the Linkstation file system and other workarounds) that would be the only serious way to go with regards to Gentoo on the Kuropro. I briefly attempted a go at it but quickly discovered it was going to be more time consuming than I could afford and well outside my technical abilities.

Thanks ramuk & juano.

I have a lot of real work on at the moment, so looks like freelink for the time being.

Cheers,
Stonie.

I have Genlink on my kuro and it works without problems (there is one problem, but probably related to the kernel). However it took me some time (about one day) to clean the Genlink distribution. It would be a good thing to create new Genlink images, maybe I'll manage to do it during summer holidays.

Best regards,
Marek Wróbel

mwrobel: if you managed to actually find time for that, I'd like to get the result.

I'm going to give it another crack shortly and update the wiki as I go.

Cheers,
Stonie.

Finally got round to investing some time...

I have been trying to install Genlink on a LS-GL with the method listed here http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/GenLink , but I can’t seem to get Gcc and Glibc to build natively in the current portage tree? I have tried all manner of version combinations without luck? emerge system does not seem possible with the current portage tree unless I’m missing something obvious.

Some of the problems I have encountered are listed in this post:
viewtopic.php?f=39&t=22104

So despite hacking away for days, I can’t seem to find a way to emerge system with the current instructions?

It’s a shame because I’m keen to get genlink working for ARM and I am also willing to spend the time if someone can point me in the right direction?

Cheers,
Stonie.
