Hi All,

I have a Linkstation LS420D0602-EU which is now 3 years old and which I've been using to store the media files for my mac mini based home theatre system.
We've just moved house and so the LS420D0602-EU has just been plugged back in. Unfortunately the power light has been flashing amber with 1 long flash and 2 shorter flashes. From what I understand from reading the LS400 user manual the means that the Linkstation is operating in degraded mode and the message from NasNavigator2 states this, saying: I12: The RAID array is in degraded mode. NasNavigator2 states a further error message: I11: Drive 2 has too many bad sectors.
The LS420D0602-EU also does not turn off - despite being switched off at the rear, the lights are still flashing and it is still working, albeit in its degraded state.
I hoped those with experience on the forum might be able to help me know what to do from here, as I'm not sure whether I need to replace or simply reformat drive 2 and if I can do this without losing what's on drive 1, as the 2 drives were set up in a RAID array. I also wanted to know if anyone had experienced the same phenomena with the drive not turning off and what this means. I very much appreciate having this space to ask experienced users. Thanks in advance.

The Linkstation will shut down after the rebuild.
This can take 3 days.
Many hard disks diees while this hard work.
Start your backup now.

Thanks for your reply oxygen8.
The Linkstation isn't rebuilding as far as I'm aware.
Can I buy any USB HDD and use it to back up the functioning drive from the RAID array? Also I can't login via the drive's IP address and am just met with a blank screen, so I'm not sure how I'd do the backup.

Thanks again

"I11: Drive 2 has too many bad sectors."

the nas will be very slow.
You will allways get a timeout when you try to open the webinterface.
But you may be able to cope your data.

If you are not able to do that kill the power and recover your data

Use a pc with knoppix

for Raid1
Code:
mkdir /mnt/daten

mdadm --assemble --run /dev/md1 /dev/sdb6

mount /dev/md1 /mnt/daten

ls -l /mnt/daten

Thanks again oxygen8. As I use the drive with a Mac and don't own a PC, I take it that I wouldn't be able to use Knoppix, even if I employed Parallels to run Windows on my Mac?

Using OSXFUSE together with Fuse-XFS works BUT is very slow. Booting Linux on the Mac (USB "live" linux) works FAST

oxygen8 once again I thank you. Is there a beginners guide, or the like, which would break down how to do what you've advised, as I have no experience of doing anything like this and am a little unsure, even after searching online, as to what a USB live linux is. Thanks again for your assistance and tolerance.
