First message here, so please be nice with me.
I have a Gigabit Linkstation. I´m not sure if "HS" or "HG" means gigabit. It´s the original White Linkstation 1 device, but with a gigabit port instead of 100Mbit Ethernet.
It´s got the stock fimware with the original 300 Gig drive.
However, recently I wanted to connect a 1 TB USB drive via the rear USB 2.0 port, and since the other HD is far away, I wanted to use a 5m USB 2.0 "extension cable". I learned the hard way that USB 2.0 "extension cables" are not transparent at all, from the software side. The manufacturers just use a USB 2.0 hub chip, and wire a single port to it. So when plugged into a PC it detects a "USB 2.0 hub". This is different from USB 1.x extension cables, which featured custom chips to amplify the signal but which were 100% transparent from the software side.
Obviously, this makes such setup NOT WORK with the Linkstation, which sees a "USB HUB" not the USB 2.0 hard disk after it.
So the million dollar question is:
Will OpenLINK fix this and allow me to see the USB 2.0 external hard drive even when connected thru a "USB HUB" (that is, the extension cable which is really a usb 2.0 hub at the end of one long cable).
Which OpenLink firmware release should and I get and from where?.
Thanks in advance
