First off, this is a newbie warning. Linux is not my stong point.

I had previously been experiencing the 5 Minute Reboot Problem. I followed the instructions here:

http://hvkls.dyndns.org/downloads/docum ... aller.html

and all appeared to go OK. This kept the reboots away for almost a year. However, recently the reboots began again, and it looks like I'm back at 2.4.2 again!

Soo, I repeated the instructions above (it worked last time!). However, upon reboot, I'm still at 2.4.2 :(

Here's the dialog from the webinstaller. Hopefully this will tell you something more thant it tells me!

As for the 5-min-reboots, forcing avr_evtd to the 'other' device will probably do. Make sure /etc/default/avr_evtd contains

DEVICE=/dev/ttyS1

and reboot. If that doesn't help, use

DEVICE=/dev/ttyS0

Choose vi or any "Linux compatible" editor to edit the file.

As for the kernel, I would start afresh.

rm -r /boot/*
touch /boot/variant-legacy
touch /boot/variant-notmp
webinstaller-kernelinst.sh

:up: Thank you! The

DEVICE=/dev/ttyS1

line was commented out. I removed the comment. No joy. I then changed to ttyS0. Still no joy. Then I started afresh with your commands, and big time joy! Currently the system is running at 2.6.25.20 and all is good.

Unless you say otherwise, I'll leave the DEVICE= line at the ttyS0 value (the way it is now).

Thank you again for your help!

After running many months without a reversion back to 2.4, we had an extended power failure and the UPS gave up the ghost. The NAS had what was probably an ugly power down (slow voltage decay on the AC when the UPS died).

The result that the unit booted back up to the old version. Is there any mod I can do to ensure that this unit always boots back up to 2.6?

Hopefully these command/responses will help (performed after following your instructions again to get the unit back up to 2.6):

ls /boot/*running
====>/boot/try_new_kernel.running

uname -r | grep -E "^2.6"
====>2.6.25.20-svn365-dirty493

which grep
====>/bin/grep

grep --version | grep grep
====>grep (GNU grep) 2.4.2

Thanks in advance for your help.
