Hi,

I'm trying to set up email notification so that it can alert me if there are any problems, I am using the following details;

SMTP server address: smtp.gmail.com
SMTP port no: 465
Authentication type: Login (SMTP-AUTH)
Selected SSL/TLS
Username/Password: my gmail email address and password

When I try to test send it fails and doesn't work? Have I got something wrong??

Last time this came up at work for a related issue, I had to dig a bit, but found this....

"Gmail requires SMTP port 587 for TLS/STARTTLS and port 465 for SSL. More information is available in their documentation", here:

http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answ ... swer=13287

Try changing just the port to 587 and see if that works.

If it does not, you might try defining the Host as: tls://smtp.gmail.com (assuming the field you're filling out allows that) as well as Port 587.

Worth a shot anyway.

I have a pro duo and keep getting the message "failed to send test email." I tried gmail and goddady and verizon and none of them worked. I think it is the problem with LS since I have these smtp working in my email clients.

does anyone have similar problem and/or solution? call buffalo tech support and only thing the rep said is sometimes it is port forwarding in router but I also enabled port forwarding already.

Is it a LS-WVL?

If so, here's a screenshot from my unit (some information is replaced with 'xxxxxx')

http://screencast.com/t/8fENaAWJ

It's going to my own dedi server, and it works fine.

Hi,
Just a quick note in case some people are still having trouble setting up email notifications.

A common error is related to the NAS drive being unable to access a DNS server in order to resolve the address of the email server (e.g smtp.gmail.com).

Under the 'Network' tab you may need to specify a DNS server. Usually the IP address of your router will suffice (AKA default gateway address), if not you may also use google's public DNS servers (or any other DNS server of your choice)

Google public DNS servers:
DNS1 (Primary): 8.8.8.8
DNS2 (Secondary): 8.8.4.4

Here's a screen cap of the network settings for my linkstation as reference: (I've just used the IP address of my router)

Hope this helps...

Hi jjhung88,
Any chance you can provide screen caps of your "Network >> Settings" and "System >> Maintenance" pages so we can maybe spot any errors. (Be sure to black out any sensitive info such as passwords and email addresses - mainly the bit before @ )

Here is a cap of my Maintenance page for reference using Gmail and it works perfectly fine.

You mentioned previously that you enabled port forwarding in an attempt to remedy this, what exactly did you change/set? you may have inadvertently disabled the ability because Gmail works just fine for me with no port forwarding needed. If you could also provide a cap of your port forwarding settings as well that could help pinpoint any errors.

Hi,
I was having a think about this issue the other day and thought of another thing you might try if having difficulty setting up email notification with Gmail.

Instead of using
smtp.gmail.com
try using
smtp.googlemail.com

It's worth a try...

Just created an account to verify Turtles last bit of guidance!

changing smtp.google.com to smtp.googlemail.com worked for me.

Also - I have 2 step authentication, so I had to set up a one time password within my gmail account in order to get the password accepted by gmail.

Thank you!

Hi,

I was also unable to send email notifications from my Linkstation 420D after setting up the system for the first time.

After varying the email settings many many times without success, I realized that the problem is the one, which turtle1980 already mentioned: "the NAS drive being unable to access a DNS server...".

Indeed by default my Linkstation Default Gateway address and Primary (and Secondary) DNS server addresses were blank.

So for you others, who still have problems, check and set them, if the fields are empty.

Open the web setting access of your Linkstation and navigate to :

Advanced Settings -> Network -> IP Address

There click the "change" button to change:

Default Gateway address
Primary DNS Server
(Secondary DNS Server)

I guess you can put there your Internet service provider's DSNS and Gateway addresses or some general DNS server addresses, but for me everything worked fine, when I have set them to be my own router's address in my own network:

Default Gateway address 192.168.1.1
Primary DNS Server 192.168.1.1

I even left the seconday DNS Server address blank, because if my own gateway is broken, there is no other way out. :)

I hope this helps.

Btw. This solved also my problem of NTP-server updates, which were also not working, when the email notification was "broken".

Dear All,

We are also facing the same issue while configuring the email notification.
I have done all the network setting gateway, dns and all but still the below error we are getting.

We are mailing service provider and we have 4-5 type mail server but unable to configure any of the mail server where we can get the mail notification.
I tried with close relay and open relay as well, TLS SSL and others but none of the setting working for mail notification.

Request you to team please check the same and do the needful.

For e-mail notification to work on my LS-WXL, Username and Recipient must be equal.
