Fantastic that worked a treat.

When I copied the code in initially it failed to save because of a syntax error, but it was just because I had an extra " } " in there. By the way I have a Mac so I used "Command + S". So I reloaded the login web page and tried again and it logged in. I was a bit confused as to why the admin user didn't show up but then I re-read your instructions to go to System menu and click Restore/Erase.

This has saved a lot of hassle sending the unit back to Buffalo. I've been slowly trying to get it back on-line since it went into emergency mode a few weeks ago and now after a firmware reset utility from Buffalo Support and this login fix I'm back in action. Very happy.

I don't know why but after my firmware reset (provided by Buffalo) the login failed to reset to the defaults. Apparently this is a common problem. I tried using the instructions from here http://au.faq.buffalo-global.com/app/an ... 13/p/31,33 to use the function button to force the reset but it didn't work.

Anyway here I am with a working NAS - awesome!

Dave

I have the same issue, forgot the password....

So I tried to follow the steps of Pynther, step 1-4 went fine, however I am not able to save it... it gives an error message, I checked if there is an extra "{" or "}" however, that seems to be not the case.....

Can someone please give me advise what to do?

Thanks!

Hi everyone, i have the same problem here, but i try the code with no luck result.
can i have some help what exactly to be done for me to work this code,
here are the things i tried:
1. copy the code and paste it entirely to the login_utils.js (deleting everything on the original)
2. copy the code and paste it to the login_utils.js (only the function section)
3. copy the code and paste it to login_utils.js deleting extra "}" but i do not know which "}" should i delete as i see many om them.

Please help i am really in need to get into the NAS or is there anything that i can do to just use the NAS as new setup?
I mean i dont care on all the data stored to it, i just need to reconfigure it.

thanks in advance...

Ariel

According to the post, you should replace the login function.
You can identify the braces you need to remove by simple counting.
Every open brace has to have a closing brace.
So look for the first opening brace and then count and you will find
the matching closing brace. Everything inbetween "belongs together"
(no matter how much openeing/closing braces occur within).
So replace from "function login" until the closing curly brace of the function
(read: the matching closing CURLY brace to the opening CURLY brace).

Thank you very much Pynther !!!

almost one year ago i suddenly found my Link Station LS-WXL in EM mode.
At that time i could not fix the Problem, therefore i decided to save the data
from the NAS to a normal Harddrive first.

(I spend quite some time to rescue the data using a Linux LiveCD Ubuntu 10.4 because i am not very expert in things like that).

Yesterday i tryed again to fix the Problem and I started with updating the Firmware to 1.68.
The update went successful but i could not log in anymore because i forgot the Password.

I followed the instruction on the Buffalo homepage to initialize the Link Station to ist factory defaults.
I tried several times the power switch / function button procedure but even when the LED were
flashing correctly during the procedure the standard Login "admin" / "password" didn't work.

I found the net full with threads about this problem but none of them were helpful.
I was very close to give up again when i found your post here in this forum.

It worked perfectly and i would like to thank for your help ...

You just made my day :up:

Same problem. Pynther's solution does not work with me. After exactly doing that, I get a page for local users. On that page it is not possible to continue to the system menu (no tabs).
what I am doing wrong??
Problem solved. I had to change username admin in my previous username.
Many thanks.

And adding many many thanks to Pynther again. Quite unbelievable how this works, and slightly worrying from a security point of view.

I had a LS-WXL in EM coma for some months until I reflashed the firmware, then it booted up but wouldn't let me login, and the factory reset using the Function button didn't work at all. Some more months of searching forums lead to nothing until this posting (presumably creeping up the search results).

Once I got in all the pages were visible EXCEPT the users page so I couldn't reset the password. However I could now do a factory reset from the admin page which reset the admin password and still preserved the data and now it is fully alive again. Time for a beer :D

I had the same problem and i managed to reset the password by manipulating javascript with Google Chrome developer tools.

Instructions:

1. Go to login page
2. Open developer tools Sources tab
3. Open login_utis.js from authentication folder
4. Replace original login function with this:

Code:
function login(f, lang) {
   if (login_lock != 0) {
      return;
   }
   login_lock = 1;

   var uid = Ext.getCmp('user');
   var uid_value = uid.getValue();
   var pwd = Ext.getCmp('password');
   var pwd_value = pwd.getValue();

   f.form.submit({
      url: '/dynamic.pl',
      params: {
         bufaction: 'verifyLogin'
      },
      waitTitle: S('Please Wait...'),
      waitMsg: S('Logging In...'),
      success: function(form, action){
         var decodedResponse= Ext.decode(action.response.responseText);
         var jsonData = decodedResponse.data;
         loginSuccess(f, action, uid_value, lang);
      },
      failure: function(form, action){
         loginSuccess(f, action, uid_value, lang);
      }
   });
};

5. Hit Ctrl+S
6. Now you can log in as admin with any password. I used u:admin p:admin
7. Use restore to reset password to default

This time poor security was a good thing :)

Br, Ville

Yes I have the same problem on Linkstation model LS-XL.0TL-EU
Buffalo instructions seem to mention a reset or function button but thwere is no such button on this model. The Buffalo documentation also advises, with Homer Simpson style clarity, "to reset the admin username and passeword ... login as admin and choose the reset option".
