Post subject:  Make LinkStation play .MKV on my PS3.

Hi guys! :D

Well, the topic pretty much says it all. Is it possible to install, for example, Playstation Media Server on my LinkStation Pro? The PS3 can't transcode(?) .MKV's from the intergrated Media Server so I need one that can do this live, as I play the files, and I know that PMS does this perfectly. So, is it possible to install PMS on my LinkStation? Can you, in that case, give me some pointers?

If you've got any other sollution for playing .MKV's from the LinkStation to the PS3, I'd be happy to hear them too!

Thanks // dellhem

The same story everywhere. :-(
.MKV is NOT a decent description for an encoding format.
It is a container format which can contain myriads of different
encoding formats (aka. codecs). Without knowledge of the codec
used in your .MKVs, nobody can tell you if it is possible to have the
LS to "translate" them.
If it is a simple repacking, the LS will be usable, if it is a real
transcoding, it will take ages for a single file (and I mean "ages").
It depends on the content (codecs) your PS3 can deal with and
the codecs used in your .MKVs (in rare cases also a matter of the
configuration of the media player).

If you know the contents, you can try "ln -s myfile.mkv myfile.mkv.mp3". The trick works for me with MPD (music layer daemon) and .m4a files; MPD was compiled with MP4 support but doesn't like .m4[abv] file extensions. Worth a shot.

No, but maybe somone can tell me if it is possible to install "Playstation Media Server" on the LS, and if so, maybe redirect me to a friendly guide. Cause if that's possible, there's no problem...

It seems as if you still haven't understand the point.
The CPU of the LS (no matter which one) has not enough
power to transcode arbitrary encoded stuff in realtime.
Even "near" realtime is impossible for the most conversions
which are not simple repackaging.
This is not a restriction of the application but the hardware.
Look into your .MKV, determine the used codecs, compare
the codecs to the capabilities of your PS3. If the codecs are
supported by your PS3, it is a matter of configuration or a
matter of repackaging (choose whatever is more convenient
to you). If the codecs are not supported, you will have to use
transcoding on the LS -> forget it. It will take several hours
for a one hour video (in average).

I also doubt PS3MS can be installed satisfactorily on the NAS - at least it won't be able to transcode fast enough for any usage.

You can get mkv2vob on your PC, and repack your mkv as mpeg streams (without transcoding the video), it's fast and usually works very well with SONY PS and Bravia TV.

Except when the video was compressed using "extreme" options : any parameter beigng above Level 4.1 - like too many ref frames - will need you to transcode too.

Anyhow, once your mkv are repacked / transcoded to basic H264 mpg streams, your PS3 will be able to play them from your NAS DLNA.

To insert mkv to ps3, it is better to convert mkv to ps3 more supported MPEG-1, WMV, AVI.
Here is just the step by step guide on how to do that at
