I have tried to do the patch that is here: http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Con ... _a_USB_hub, but it references the file at :/etc/murasaki/bin/mount_sd.sh.

The trouble is that the LS-QL does not have a /etc/murasaki directory and I cannot find a mount_sd file anywhere, or for that matter, any files with mount_sd in them.

If anybody has done this patch on a quad or has any ideas about where to go and try now would be appreciated.

The guide is outdated (last significant change from 2006).
It is not working for current boxes, obviously.
There are some scripts Buffalo uses for mounting the USB
stuff (at least it was for firmwares 1.2x), which were not
able to handle any kind of USB hubs due to some quirky
device path parsing (if I remember correctly).
I am not sure if it is possible at all (without too much hacking)
to change this script, because most of the "real flesh" of the
funtionality was located in a file which is controlled by the
sanity checks of Buffalo (so every change is reverted when
you reboot).
But with enough passion, one can find a way, I am sure.
