Does anybody know if (or how) i can install java 1.6 on an LS2?

Or is any other Box available that can run java?

Is the package you are looking for available in Debian (packages.debian.org)?

If so, that would be the easiest way to go, probably.

JRE or JDK?
JRE: There is sun-java6-jre in Debian lenny (or etch-backports) or openjdk-6-jre-headless (lenny only).
JDK: openjdk-6-jdk (lenny only).

Thanks thats interessting for me too.

How do i install the jre? I tried "apt-get sun-java6-jre" but he didnt found the linked packages.
Whats "lenny only"? Is it a software like Freelink? How can i update? Or install?

Lenny ist the name of the current stable Debian (aka Debian 5). The previous stable Debian was etch. Freelink is based on etch.
So "lenny only" means that those packages are available in lenny (and upwards), not in the older etch.

You can browse packages for the various Debian versions online. For example these are the results for packages containing "jre" in their names: click me

Besides the prepared apt-packages, you can download jdk "trial" versions at sun's website: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/embedded.jsp

If i see it correct there is only Java 1.4.2 available for MIPS Linux Systems. But what Version is the correct one?

I have seen some users here which apparently have lenny running on their mips-boxes.
My LS Pro is arm-based and I have not yet upgraded to lenny so I cannot help you on that topic.

Again, I don't have a mips-based box so I can only guess: Little Endian at least, and for your current glibc version you could query apt-get/aptitude.

But that 1.4.2 version should be the last resort only - if you can't find anything better!
If you just need an jre (and you don't want to upgrade to lenny), then maybe this is something for you: http://packages.debian.org/etch-backports/sun-java6-jre
See http://www.backports.org for more information.

EDIT: The backport-jre-package does NOT seem to be "headless" so I don't know whether it will run well on the very limited linkstation.

Yep, with u-boot and have you checked your messages? You asked me back in December for a kernel with idx support was it? :p

the mentioned java package at backport wont work:

do you have an tutorial about using u-boot on an LS? or any other solution. I only need a headless java running.

First, try aptitude instead of apt-get. Sometimes aptitude is smarter when it comes to resolving dependencies...
If that doesn't help, try installing sun-java6-bin separetly BEFORE installing sun-java6-jre...

EDIT: I have just seen that sun-java6-bin is not available for mips/mipsel. So providing sun-java6-jre for mips/mipsel in backports is completely useless... :down:

As we have seen your options for running java on a mips based box with debian etch are very limited.
You should really upgrade to debian lenny if you want to use a recent headless jre!

andre is working on something that will flash uboot (required for 2.6, 2.6 required for Lenny). You could do it manually. Some LS2's have different chips and one of these chips has a problem flashing to a certain part of ROM I believe. Neither chip affects installing uboot though.

What do you get if you issue:
