Post subject:  reinstall?

Hi,

i like to reinstall my LS2. Therefore i have connected the hard disk to my pc and boot with knoppix. I deleted the partition. Then i reinstalled it into my ls2 and bootet again. The linkstation starts in EM Mode and i try to install the firmware (Freelink). But it wont work. An error appeared that the flashing of the firmware failed. I tried also with the original firmware from buffalo.

Do i have to format the disk first? Or what else could be the problem?

I connected the LS2 directly to my PC. Deaktivated Antivirus-Software and Firewall. And startet the updater. I am working on Vista.

Any idea?

I had same problem... use xp instead, I haven't found a way to do it in vista... xp works flawlessly :D

Thanks,

i tried to flash from my XP Notebook. Firewall Anti-Virus etc. is disabled. But also wont work. At the end the error appears "flashing failed"

I tried to reboot the box. And didnt find it any more in the network. It wont boot in EM and i cant find any box with some searching tools. Also there is no entry on my dhcp list for the box. So i removed the partitions again and startet from beginning. The same result. Error after flashing. Box bootet not in EM and cant find it. I decided to connect the harddisk to my pc and startet with Knoppix to fix the ip adress. But i cant find the appropiate file.

On /mnt/hda3 are only these folders:
/media/hda3/tmpimage.tgz
/media/hda3/image.zip
/media/hda3/ap_firm_mem
/media/hda3/spool
/media/hda3/share-mac
/media/hda3/share
/media/hda3/lost+found

/mnt/hda1 and mnt/hda2 are not reachable. Maybe the installation was incomplete. Is there any option to copy all neccesry files to harddisk?

I had to run it in Windows 2000 mode to get it to work. Can you switch modes?

Just a couple of things :

You'll need to run fix_ext_magic to see hda1 on PC

You need to flash the box twice after deleting all partitions

Firmware installer will always say that it failed if trying to install freelink on LS2

@davy_gravy
I remove all partitions before running the installer. So yes its blank. But after the second flashing process it contains the files mentioned in the topic above. But it wont work

@Bauldrick
Where can i get fix_ext_magic and how do i run it?

Yes i know. I am flashing always twice. First to create the partitions and after about 30 minutes flashing again. The second flash takes much longer than the first before it aborts.

I have read it in the wiki. If i restart the harddisk after the second flashing process it seems to boot correct. The power LED is blinking and after some seconds it stays green. The Netzwork led is blinking and stays green too. But i cant find the NAS on the network. It is not in the dhcp client list of my router. NAS Navigator 2 and the flashing tool didnt find it. And the advanced IP Scanner didnt find it too. I dont know if it is not flashed correctly or if it works and only a problem with the dhcp server exists.

Is it possible to fix the ip?

Post subject:  Re: reinstall?

i used fix_ext_magic to get access to hda1.

That works. In /etc/network/interfaces i found this:

Quote:
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.11.150
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 192.168.0.255
gateway 0.0.0.0

I removed broadcast (what is it for?) and changed this to:
Quote:
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.150
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1

After reboot i can ping the LS2 and i can connect via SSH.

Thanks the problem was the static ip which was out of range of my network! I dont know why it was not set to dhcp?

Last question.

ping www.google.com wont work. The gateway is configured correctly (192.168.1.1.) are there any other settings?

yes, it sounds like your /etc/resolv.conf needs to be updated/set.

By the way, do not try and use dhcp. You will lose connection to box and have to reconnect hdd etc...

If you want dhcp you'll have to:

Code:
apt-get install dhcpcd
