/bin/sh: sort: command not found

You copied and symlinked your /usr folder ?

True? Then the busybox symlinks in /usr/bin are broken.

ls -al in /usr/bin shows: sort -> ../../bin/busybox

This is correct for the orginal folder but not for a relocated.

Try:

cd /usr/bin
rm sort
ln -s /bin/busybox ./sort

:)

look at http://buffalo.nas-central.org/PITS/00027
but i think this is only valid for the LS2 (mips)...

but it may be the reason why this happende to you.

i found some interesting links:

http://www.linux-mips.org/wiki/Main_Page
and especially
http://www.linux-mips.org/wiki/Porting

maybe the kernelsource from there is more developed regarding mips.
at least we should try it.

some very interesting links regarding the mips-cpu which were found by timtimred:

Heres what I did

Get the kernel source (linux-2.4.20_mipsel_linkstation.tar.gz) in gpl_mipsel-hdhlan.zip.
Extract it.
Copy the "sample_config/defconfig-linkstation-hlanv2" (in my archive) as ".config".
Copy "arch/mips/ld.script.in" to "arch/mips/ld.script.zboot".
Remove "jiffies" line on "arch/mips/ld.script.zboot".
Modify the word "ld.script" to "ld.script.zboot" in "arch/mips/zboot/IDT/79EB434/Makefile". (on lines 51, 52)
Remove a file ".hhl_cross_compile" if you compile the kernel on LinkStation itself.
"make oldconfig"
"make dep"
"make vmlinux"
"objcopy -O binary vmlinux /bootII/vmlinuxII.bin"

It seemed to finish without errors

Would be if it worked!!! But it doesn't.

Loading it - insmod loaderII.o kernel=vmlinuxII.bin - locks the machine (then get 6 lights after 5 mins of nothing)
Loading it - by rebooting after putting vmlinuxII.bin in bootII - get 6 lights

[Oh]

Just noticed the instructions changed!!!

{http://www5.atwiki.jp/kuro-bsd/pages/132.html}

p.s is anyone else still trying this exept me? because I'll try the exact steps on the page following zImage route - if someone else wants to go down the vmlinux route - taking note of the instructions

ohayden trys to get the 2.6-kernel running on the LS.....he tried 2.4.20 also i think...i am not sure if alibo also tries to do that.....go to the IRC.

to make it easier for you:

http://stud3.tuwien.ac.at/~e0025690/IRC/HeavyApplet.html

look at the instructions carefully! he states that his loader will only boot zImages and no vmlinux.

but at least he gives us some more information :)

Last bit from me on this, followed the new improved instructions, cheers :o) at http://www5.atwiki.jp/kuro-bsd/pages/132.html (Some steps are corrected. Is it OK? Please let me know) Yes

Got my zImage.bin but it wouldn't load with the loader.o from that site this time. (insmod loader.o kernel=zImage.bin)

But when I used andres and changed the zImage to vmlinux it had the same effect as before :

root@LINKSTATION2:~# uname -a
Linux LINKSTATION2 2.4.20_mipsel_linkstation #1 Sat May 20 07:22:44 CDT 2006 mips unknown

and rebooted after 5mins...

Anyways the instructions work I guess (if I can do it they must!!!)

Bauldrick, try to compile an uncompressed (vmlinux) not a compressed (zImage) kernel, hopefully you get better results.

make vmlinux
objcopy -O binary vmlinux /bootII/vmlinuxII.bin

Before the bootloader can work, you have to tell me what you get from:

nm /bootII/vmlinuxII.bin | grep _ftext

nm /bootII/vmlinuxII.bin | grep kernel_entry

so I can adjust the bootloader script! I'll update the exp. mips-bootloader to "v3". More precisely, /bootII/loaderII.o is the loader.o taken from loader_mips.20060520, and load_addr and start_addr as supplied by you will be passed to the loader.

out of curiosity i tried those commands on my LS1...

root@LINKSTATION:~# nm vmlinux | grep _ftext
nm: 'vmlinux': No such file
root@LINKSTATION:~#
root@LINKSTATION:~# nm vmlinux.bin | grep _ftext
nm: 'vmlinux.bin': No such file
root@LINKSTATION:~#
root@LINKSTATION:~# cd /boot
root@LINKSTATION:/boot#
root@LINKSTATION:/boot# nm vmlinux.bin | grep _ftext
nm: vmlinux.bin: File format not recognized
root@LINKSTATION:/boot#
root@LINKSTATION:/boot# nm vmlinux.bin | grep kernel_entry
nm: vmlinux.bin: File format not recognized

where should these commands be executed?

that was not my question.

nm + grep are of course on my LS1.

but i got that errors anyway...is this working on your debianized LS1?

Doesn't work for me either. Maybe on the LSII... we could use the values from the Japanese Readme blindly.

I did it the vmlinux way originally, it came out about 1.7MB and (obviously now?) didn't work:

root@LINKSTATION2:/mnt/hda/kernel# nm /mnt/hda/kernel/vmlinuxII.bin | grep _ftext
nm: /mnt/hda/kernel/vmlinuxII.bin: File format not recognized

root@LINKSTATION2:/mnt/hda/kernel# nm /mnt/hda/kernel/vmlinuxII.bin | grep kernel_entry
nm: /mnt/hda/kernel/vmlinuxII.bin: File format not recognized

is that a new loader on his page?

We need to ask him; somebody on LSII, that is. Tell him we want to compile a 2.6, and we think our bootloader script plus an an uncompressed kernel will yield better results than a direct insmod and the compressed kernel.
