Does mount report the root filesystem is mounted rw?

1st reboot loads the new kernel, that works - if I leave it alone it will reboot itself after 5mins to the original kernel.

1st reboot loads the new kernel, that works - if I issue 'reboot' I get 7 flashing lights, then press the power button and it boots the new kernel, leave it and it reboots itself to the original

Like I said earlier I have zero experiance, but thought I'd give the kernel ago - but:

root@LINKSTATION2:/usr/src/linux# make vmlinux
/bin/sh: mips_fp_le-gcc: command not found
scripts/split-include include/linux/autoconf.h include/config
mips_fp_le-gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/mnt/hda/kernel/linux-2.4.20_mipsel_linkstation/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -Wno-trigraphs -O2 -fno-strict-aliasing -fno-common -fomit-frame-pointer -I /mnt/hda/kernel/linux-2.4.20_mipsel_linkstation/include/asm/gcc -G 0 -mno-abicalls -fno-pic -pipe -mtune=r4600 -mips2 -Wa,--trap -DKBUILD_BASENAME=main -c -o init/main.o init/main.c
make: mips_fp_le-gcc: Command not found
make: *** [init/main.o] Error 127
root@LINKSTATION2:/usr/src/linux#

What is mips_fp_le-gcc, I guess I need it?!?

Hi!

Maybe a symlink will do the job !?!?

ln -s /usr/bin/gcc /usr/bin/mips_fp_le-gcc

? ? ?

Nice to see some progress. Sorry I've been very busy lately. I went through the motions again from scratch and here is what I have:

Actually I did this to get past the missing "mips_fp_le-gcc":
ln -s /usr/bin/gcc-4.0 /usr/bin/mips_fp_le-gcc

and then during the make vmlinux, I errored with:
init/do_mounts.c:53: error: static declaration of 'root_device_name' follows non-static declaration
/root/mips/2.11/linux-2.4.20_mipsel_linkstation/include/linux/fs.h:1536: error:
previous declaration of 'root_device_name' was here
make: *** [init/do_mounts.o] Error 1
derro:/usr/src/linux#

In init.do_mounts.c, it's declared as:
static char root_device_name[64];

Any ideas what wrong with it?

Just for fun, I removed the static from the "static char root_device_name" and it compiled further and now I get:

/root/mips/2.11/linux-2.4.20_mipsel_linkstation/include/asm/softirq.h: In function 'cpu_bh_disable':
/root/mips/2.11/linux-2.4.20_mipsel_linkstation/include/asm/softirq.h:27: error: invalid lvalue in increment
/root/mips/2.11/linux-2.4.20_mipsel_linkstation/include/asm/softirq.h: In function '__cpu_bh_enable':
/root/mips/2.11/linux-2.4.20_mipsel_linkstation/include/asm/softirq.h:34: error: invalid lvalue in decrement
make[2]: *** [sched.o] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/root/mips/2.11/linux-2.4.20_mipsel_linkstation/kernel'
make[1]: *** [first_rule] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/mips/2.11/linux-2.4.20_mipsel_linkstation/kernel'
make: *** [_dir_kernel] Error 2

So I think we are missing a step or something.

The japenese one > defconfig-linkstation-hlanv2

Looks like it is working now, after ln -s /usr/bin/gcc /usr/bin/mips_fp_le-gcc

Spoke too soon!!

(during make vmlinux)

make[2]: mips_fp_le-ld: Command not found
make[2]: *** [kernel.o] Error 127
make[2]: Leaving directory `/mnt/hda/kernel/linux-2.4.20_mipsel_linkstation/kernel'
make[1]: *** [first_rule] Error 2

make: *** [_dir_kernel] Error 2

so this seems to be another command...

whats mips_fp_le_ld??

EDIT:
root@LINKSTATION:~# ld
ld: no input files

i found it in /usr/bin.

so create a symlink like with gcc.

Where's gcc_s on your system? Add the path to /etc/ld.so.conf and run ldconfig, like if it's at /usr/local/gcc_s, add /usr/local

I'm also using the Japanese config from the loader_mips.20060415.tar under the sample_config. I took the "defconfig-linkstation-hlanv2.config" and mv it to the root of /usr/src/linux as .config.

@andre: I did a "find . -iname gcc_s*" and found nothing, but then again I'm not getting the same error as Bauldrick.

I followed mindbenders steps exactly. This is what I did:

* Got the kernel source (linux-2.4.20_mipsel_linkstation.tar.gz) in gpl_mipsel-hdhlan.zip.
* Extracted it.
* Copied the "sample_config/defconfig-linkstation-hlanv2" as ".config".
* "make oldconfig"
* "make dep"
* "make vmlinux"

Then I had the error with the "root_device_name" so I dinked it and then I ended up with the "error: invalid lvalue in increment ".

Hmm, there are more steps in <http://www5.atwiki.jp/kuro-bsd/pages/132.html>:

Get the kernel source (linux-2.4.20_mipsel_linkstation.tar.gz) in gpl_mipsel-hdhlan.zip.
Extract it.
Copy the "sample_config/defconfig-linkstation-hlanv2" (in my archive) as ".config".
Copy "arch/mips/ld.script" to "arch/mips/ld.script.zboot".
Remove "jiffies" line on "arch/mips/ld.script.zboot".
Modify the word "ld.script" to "ld.script.zboot" in "arch/mips/zboot/IDT/79EB434/Makefile".
Remove a file ".hhl_cross_compile" if you compile the kernel on LinkStation itself.
"make oldconfig"
"make dep"
"make zImage" (or try "LANG=C make zImage" if failed.)
"objcopy -O binary zImage zImage.bin"

Heres what I'll try then

Get the kernel source (linux-2.4.20_mipsel_linkstation.tar.gz) in gpl_mipsel-hdhlan.zip.
Extract it.
Copy the "sample_config/defconfig-linkstation-hlanv2" (in my archive) as ".config".
Copy "arch/mips/ld.script[b:920b1].in[/b:920b1]" to "arch/mips/ld.script.zboot".
"make dep"

[b:920b1]----------------------------[/b:920b1]

This must be close to the end, atleast 2 hrs before this error (how long on these boxes to compile anyhow?)

nm vmlinux | grep -v '\(compiled\)\|\(\.o$\)\|\( [aUw] \)\|\(\.\.ng$\)\|\(LASH[RL]DI\)' | sort > System.map
/bin/sh: sort: command not found
make: *** [vmlinux] Error 127
