Any Ideas?

UTF-8 (unicode) encoding may help you
http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/0.58/htmldoc/Chapter4.html#config-translation has support for this, with SSH I believe.

Now i have Samba 3.0.23b on my LS2 but after rebooting
samba is not started anymore... Confused

Her are some Infos whats going on:

root@BUFFALO250:/# ipkg install samba
Installing samba (3.0.23b-1askwar) on root...
Downloading http://alexander.skwar.name/~askwar/linkstation/packages/mipsel//samba_3.0.23b-1askwar_mipsel.ipk
Configuring samba
Adding links for startup script "smb"...
//usr/lib/ipkg/info/samba.postinst: /usr/sbin/update-rc.d: No such file or directory

Successfully terminated.

There is something missing ... please Help.

p.s.: If i manualy type /etc/init.d/smb start everything is fine.

Well, what do you mean with "maintain"? Version upgrades? Bug fixes? New development?

I think, I'd volunteer.

Man, you're a good bug spotter ;) In all of my other server packages, I've got a "Depends: debian-packaging-tools" but not in samba...

Fixed. Either install the new samba package which will depend on debian-packaging-tools or install debian-packaging-tools manually and run
Code:
/usr/sbin/update-rc.d smb defaults 91 35

The upload will be done in about 10 minutes (23:11 CEST, German time).

Either that or enabling the correct charset. I don't think that this is (yet another) problem with my package but a configuration issue ;)

In my smb.conf, I've got:

Code:
[global]
        dos charset = 850
        unix charset = ISO8859-1
[...]

Hah! Not my fault Cool

update-rc.d, which I ripped from Ubuntu/Debian, seems to make some assumptions without verifying them :( In this case, it seems to assume that there's /etc/rc0.d

I updated debian-packaging-tools to also create /etc/rc0.d and have it point to /etc/rc.d/rc0.d.

Could you please post the output of

Code:
ls -lad ./etc/init.d ./etc/rc.d/init.d ./etc/rc*d ./etc/rc.d/*

BEFORE you install the new debian-packaging-tools package?

On my system, this returns:

Code:

Hi,
BugHunter is back... ;)

Here is my result:

Quote:
root@BUFFALO250:/# ls -lad ./etc/init.d ./etc/rc.d/init.d ./etc/rc*d ./etc/rc.d/*
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Aug 21 23:31 ./etc/init.d
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 1024 Dec 21 2004 ./etc/rc.d
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Dec 13 2005 ./etc/rc.d/init.d -> ../init.d
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Dec 13 2005 ./etc/rc.d/init.d -> ../init.d
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Dec 21 2004 ./etc/rc.d/rc0.d
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Dec 13 2005 ./etc/rc.d/rc2.d
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Dec 21 2004 ./etc/rc.d/rc6.d
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Dec 21 2004 ./etc/rc.d/rcS.d

My Problem is still there... Samba simply dont start at boot.
Only if i type /etc/init.d/smb start it comes up.

And Thanks again...

Fine. You can go ahead and install the new debian-packaging-tools package.

:)

Hi,

i look at the probelm a little closer...

Ater boot samba is not running. When i start it manualy nothing happens.
Then i look in /var/log.smbd and found:
ERROR: can't open /var/run/samba/smbd.pid: Error was No such file or directory

Then i create the directory samba in /var/run/ manualy and start samba again.

As i said before: My Problem is still there... Samba simply dont start at boot. :(

There is now a second problem... I cant schutdown my LS2 thru the WEB-Interface anymore.
Only the Shutdown command at the prompt turns LS off.

on openlink every folder in /var is on a ramdisk. so i assume that the /var/run/samba-folder is not existing anymore after reboot!

a simple fix for that is to edit /etc/init.d/samba and add the line
Code:
mkdir -p /var/run/samba

at the very beginning of "start"

the folder would then be automatically created each time and samba would come up.

it is exactly the same problem with openssh.

Hi,

thanks mindbender this (mkdir -p /var/run/samba) fix the Samba problem at boot. :)

My Shutdown works now as well..
the melco-script /www/script/melsub_shutdown.sh checks
if there is smbd.pid in the folder /var/run/
and the new Samba v3 places the file in /var/run/samba.
After i corrected the script shutdown via the Webinterface is working again.

Now hopfully Cool my last Samba Question:

For fixing the [i]German-Umlaute[/i] problem askwartemp wrote

Quote:

[global]
dos charset = 850
unix charset = ISO8859-1
[...]

but after a reboot smb.conf is rewritten by the Webinterface.
How do i make these changes permanent?

Thanks again.

Hm. You could write a good smb.conf and copy it to, let's say, /etc/samba/smb.conf.good. In /etc/init.d/bootmisc, add:
Code:
cp /etc/samba/smb.conf.good /etc/samba/smb.conf

And in /etc/init.d/reboot, you could add:
Code:
cp /etc/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf.good

With this, the settings from your smb.conf would persist a reboot.

Hello, i have a fresh hdhlan with the freelink-firmware.
After i installed cpio with ipkg install cpio i cannot execute "ls". It ends with a relocation error:

Code:
ls: relocation error: /lib/libpthread.so.0: symbol __libc_stack_end, version GLIBC_PRIVATE not defined in  file ld.so.1 with link time reference
