I recall suffering similar problems when replacing a drive. After looking at the link you followed, it appears as if you made the file systems with this command.

mke2fs -j /dev/hdx1; mke2fs -j /dev/hdx3

My boot-loader struggled with reading the boot partition until I forced the inode size. I played with NC and uboot until I could do a file list on the drive.

mkfs.ext3 -I 128 -j /dev/sdg1

You'll need to adjust the device name as required.
