Here's the board: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/evefile ... E21643.JPG

I'm not sure about the R67 bridge job, but I think it's good enough.

The Wiggler didn't come with any docs, and has a 2x10 rather than the 2x8 header on the LS1.

well, you can try googling JTAG 2x10 wiggler to see if you can get any idea of the pinout...

your soldering looks fine... :)

EDIT: I guess you could just try pin1 <-> hole1, and hope for the best, but to me that would be a crap shoot at best... knowing the pinout for each type of adapter will make the unknowns into knowns... :)

i think i have still some JTAG10 cables lying around and as they are paid from community donations i would send them out if somebody needs the cable.

Notice the main advantage of the JTAG10 cable - you can use it on any pinout.
http://www.soc-machines.com/pdfs/JTAG10%20Datasheet.pdf

so if you need a JTAG10 (in case your wiggler does not work or you have problems using it) send a PM with your street address and i will send you a JTAG10

Based on this document they seem to match: http://www.macraigor.com/downloads/pinouts.pdf

Noob question- when flashing, does the board need a power source, or can it only be plugged into the wiggler?

It needs its normal power source. Also when powering on you need to hold down the INIT button to stop it trying to boot.

Okay, so I'm plugged in, using a parallel cable to connect to the wiggler, and I boot the LS1 while holding down the init button so power flashes green, and disk full and diag flash red. The parallel port is set to bi-directional.

I boot linux and load jtag tools, and begin
Code:
cable parallel 0x378 WIGGLER
which returns a line
Code:
Initializing Macraigor Wiggler JTAG Cable on parallel port at 0x378
. Then back to the prompt. Then I run
Code:
detect
and it just dumps me back to the prompt after a second.

Clearly something isn't working. What points of failure should I check?

can you post your entire output? also, which version of jtag tools are you using?

0.5.1, from the Lenny repos.

Code:
jtag> cable parallel 0x378 WIGGLER
Initializing Macraigor Wiggler JTAG Cable on parallel port at 0x378
jtag> detect
jtag>

I checked dmesg, 0x378 is legit.

aha! well, maybe aha...

When you say from the Lenny repo, you mean Debian proper, right?

You'll prolly have better luck w/ the precompiled tools here: http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/JTA ... /Openwince

They are what I have used probably 10 times or so to unbrick LS1's, HG's and HSs'.

The output listed on that page is exactly what I cut & pasted there... It worked great for me...

fingers crossed & good luck to you...

You might want to check that you have 3.3V on the Vcc pin? If you do not then the cable will not be correctly detected.

No change with the precompiled 0.6.

I don't have a multimeter, how might I check Vcc? A software avenue?

I think you may be able to buy a basic one for under $20 ... just bare bones. Maybe a neighbor has one?

Okay, got one.

Putting it between pins 6 and 12 gives me a good steady 3.3v. Still though, no change, detect gives me nothing.

I tried urjtag, and on detect it tells me "TDO seems to be stuck at 0".

Here's how I have it plugged in:

Score one point for your patience. Good job.

That message is not one I've ever seen...

Some googling of that message turns up a lot of hits. I'm not sure, what its implication is, though. That might be a good point to start digging for clues.

As a regular practice, I always check my soldering... I'm guessing you've triple checked that... also, is there a spot on the board that needs to be bridged?

Sorry, if you've already answered those things.

urjtag never worked for me, as it isn't patched for our boards. If you are using it, I assume you've done the research to come up with patches for it that enable board support for our boxes. ( disregard this though, if you happened to find some documents that show that - to the surprise of the community here - our boxes _have_ been made supported in urjtag.)

I'm not aware that urjtag is functional, I'll just focus on openwince from this site.

I'm at wit's end. To my untrained eyes the soldering looks good, and I even took apart the wiggler and moved the cable around in case I wasn't actually using pin 1 after all.

At this stage, would borrowing a cable from one of you gentlemen be worthwhile, or am I too far gone?
