My LS live is running kernel 2.6.12.6, is there any way to load kernel 2.6.18 on this device? I tried apt-get update but it still is running 2.6.12.6.

I'm guessing you are running the original FreeLink? If so, it is set up to use the stock kernel.

There are some newer reworkings of this kernel w/ more modules... but I'm not sure about x.x.18. Is there something particular in 2.6.18 that you need?

Currently the Linux kernel is around 2.6.29 or so...

Correct, I am running Freelink. The reason I need the newer kernel is to run Freepbx in conjunction with Asterisk. I tried running an installer and it specifically said I need version 2.6.18 to work.

I'm guessing that any kernel of that version or later would work, as long as the correct modules are built w/ it.

Do you know of a pre-compiled kernel that I can simply download, or is it something I need to build myself?

There are plenty of precomplied kernel+module packages around... I'm just not sure how the old Etch FreeLink will work w/ the newer kernels.

There are two threads you should check : Some thing along these titles:
Recomplilation GPL Effort
Towards an Armel Image

in one or both of them there is mention of compatibility... I just don't remember the details...
