OK, I have officially run into that problem as well. It seems that with e2fsprogs 1.40.5, the default inode size of 128 bytes was increased to 256 bytes.
One way to get around the problem is to declare the inode size that the old uboot expects to find:
mkfs.ext3 -I 128 /dev/hda1
Of course, the revised uboot will be nice as well.
