good point bauldrick.

prodigy7.... you have used the old partition swaping technique called debil.sh?
http://www.geishuettner.de/docs/Linkstation/

i like the hack because of its name :D

Okay ... I should update my sig ;-)
I used now freelink for the LS2, get Debian on it (debootstrap makes to much work). But the point is maybe really, that the partitions are swapped. I'll build in a new hd the next days and partition it without swapping - maybe than the light doesn't blink longer. I give a update, when I know more.

Regards foonas-em I did it as you suggest, like in this thread ; viewtopic.php?f=12&t=3769&p=39869&hilit=foonas#p39869

If your partitions are swapped (as in big one hda1) then alter
/etc/default/avr_evtd
Code:
WORK=HDA1

Code:
ROOT=HDA3

??

I have a dump of mtd0,1,2,3 uboot and foonas -em for my MX chip, I've since cat'd the stock mtd0,1,2,3 back in and then back to uboot and foonas-em - would people be able to use that providing they've MX chip (dmesg shows you)?

If someone using ST chip dumps there mtd0,1,2,3 when they've got uboot , foonas-em would people be able to use that if available, or is that stupidly dangerous and not work?

I wonder about that as well, Bauldrick but a bit differently... I mean, could a ST-LS2 owner use the contents of mtdN from a MX-LS2 box as flash images, to be dd-ed in to mtdN on the ST box?

I've got an LS2 running FreeLink 3.1, and I haven't been able to get a 2.6.22 kernel working. I've installed U-Boot which works, and I can boot the old 2.4.20 kernel, but booting any kind of 2.6.22 kernel (downloaded from nas-central or selfbuilt) results in a system that doesn't respond to anything. Hints on where to start looking appreciated.

First, the output from U-Boot's "print" command:
Code:
bootargs=root=/dev/hda1
bootcmd=run bootcmd1
nfsboot=run nfsload nfsargs;bootm
bootdelay=10
baudrate=57600
autoload=no
stdin=nc
stdout=nc
stderr=nc
ipaddr=10.0.0.78
netmask=255.255.255.0
serverip=10.0.0.17
ncip=10.0.0.17
netretry=no
nc=setenv stdin nc;setenv stdout nc;setenv stderr nc
ser=setenv stdin serial;setenv stdout serial;setenv stderr serial
ldaddr=82000000
guaddr=81000000
hdpart=0:1
hdfile=boot/vmlinuz
hdload=echo Loading ${hdpart}:${hdfile};ext2load ide ${hdpart} ${ldaddr} ${hdfile}
boothd=setenv bootargs root=/dev/hda1;bootm ${ldaddr}
hdboot=run hdload boothd
flboot=setenv bootargs root=/dev/hda1;bootm bfc40000
emboot=setenv bootargs root=/dev/ram0;bootm bfc40000
rootpath=/opt/nfsroot/mipsel
nfsargs=setenv bootargs root=/dev/nfs rw nfsroot=${serverip}:${rootpath} ip=${ipaddr}:${serverip}:${gatewayip}:${netmask}:${hostname}::off
nfsfile=vmlinuz
nfsload=nfs ${ldaddr} ${serverip}:${rootpath}/${nfsfile}
bootretry=30
bootcmd1=run hdboot;run flboot
bootcmd2=run flboot
bootcmd3=run emboot
ubpart=0:3
ubfile=share/u-boot/u-boot-v2-mips.flash.bin
ubload=echo Loading ${ubpart}:${ubfile};ext2load ide ${ubpart} ${ldaddr} ${ubfile}
ubsaddr=bfc00000
ubeaddr=bfc2ffff
ubflash=protect off ${ubsaddr} ${ubeaddr};era ${ubsaddr} ${ubeaddr};cp.b ${ldaddr} ${ubsaddr} ${filesize};cmp.b ${ldaddr} ${ubsaddr} ${filesize}
upgrade=run ubload ubflash
ethact=rc32434_eth

Then the syslog prints from a boot attempt:

What bootargs, options and commands are you using it boot the 2.6 kernel? Please post... :)

Also, any chance that it is actually booting but for some reason you are not looking at the right IP?

Did you try a network scanner like NMAP?

BTW, there is also foonas-em for the LS2, which is very nice for EM & hdd setup. Pretty easy to boot from tftp, from flash ROM or from the hdd.

Hi,

I installed the precompiled u-boot 1.0.1 yesterday together with the new 2.6 kernel on my Linkstation2 MIPSel, which was running debian etch with kernel 2.4 before that (I did the upgrade because I wanted to upgrade to lenny, and the new libc6 required kernel 2.6.8).

U-boot and the kernel seemed to work fine initially, however after some time (pretty exactly around 4 minutes uptime) my linkstation loses network connectivity, and after some 5 minutes reboots itself.

My first guess was that this could be the AVR watchdog. However the power LED is not blinking, but glowing green permanently (like it normally only does when the watchdog is satisfied), and the mc_ctld appears to be running. I also tried booting into "christmas tree mode" by keeping reset pressed while powering on the linkstation. Christmas tree mode appears to be active, which can be seen by the blinking LEDs, however the Linkstation still behaves exactly the same way and loses connectivity after 4 mins.

Since this happend the first time while I was running apt-get dist-upgrade, dpkg is now caught right in the middle of an installation, and because I already upgraded the libc6 I'm afraid it won't boot into the 2.4 kernel anymore.

Is there anything I can look for in the logfiles? I already checked /var/log/messages, but the last message is only that mc_ctld was started, afterwards some time later a reboot message is logged. My guess is that something is crashing the box, but it's a wild guess.

Any ideas how I might fix this?

Kind regards,
Torsten

I'm not 100% sure but if mc_ctld is running, you might either not have avr_evtd installed, or they might be conflicting. avr was built to replace mc_ctld, and I'm guessing they wouldn't be able to share the single UART port very cooperatively.

If you get stuck and stuff crashes, you can always tftp boot foonas-em for lsmipsel, and use that to rework your partitions. http://foonas.org/index.php/Foonas-em:TFTPBoot-lsmipsel

Hi, I'm glad to see that this topic isn't dead, yet. However, I'm still using the original 2.4 kernel on my LS2 because I appreciate the quick boot. If I understand uboot, it will load kernel 2.6.x from hard disk after kernel 2.4 has been loaded from flash ...right? So what about boot time with uboot? How long does it take until the green led stops blinking?

No, you're describing my kernelloader. Uboot is a real bootloader, and resides in flash ROM.

It may be perhaps an extra 30-60 seconds... TBH, I've never timed it, but what you give up in speed you more than gain back in flexibility and sure-footedness. You get the netconsole also, which will allow you to boot EM kernels or self-built kernels, from tftp, from ROM or from the hdd. Foonas-em replaces the built in EM kernel nicely.

Also, I don't use the 2.4 kernel anymore at all. The 2.6 more than satisfies my needs.

I actually had installed avr_evtd some time ago, but never got it to work. I never had bothered to remove it, so I removed all rests of it. It didn't seem to work, the linkstation still lost connectivity.

I hadn't known foonas-em until now, but it proved very useful the last few days, thanks for the pointer! Great that I can boot this via u-boot, even more so since EM mode does no longer work after I installed u-boot.

I now bought a new HDD, put freelink onto it and upgraded the kernel and updated all components to lenny. After the lenny upgrade, the linkstation failed again, so I did it again, and step by step, which took up the greater part of yesterday. At some point I noticed that the package "ntp" is what kills my LS2. Once I replaced ntp with openntpd everything went smoothly. Don't know what ntp does that is able to "kill" the box, but now it's working without a hitch. I'm still right in the middle of transferring all data and restoring all configurations, but foonas-em is really handy for quick transfer and my data move is coming along well, just needs some time to transfer the ~250GB by Knoppix.

Thanks alot for the tip!

Ahha! I have experienced an ntp problem also. I discovered that as long as just

ntpdate
ntp-tickadj

from the ntp package where installed, everything was fine. When ntp (entire package) was installed, it would crash after about 12-15 minutes, as regular as clockwork. I'm thinking that something was incompatible w/ the kernel or ... ?
