Has anyone compiled or looked at compiling latest kernel(s) for mips?

I don't know where mipsel kernels stand in terms of version for foonas builds ... I will check and get back to you, Bauldrick.

all / linux-linkstationmipsel: Move to 2.6.22.19, add ipv6 to -em builds

is the last I see in http://gitweb.foonas.org ... I think this is because we don't have a ls2 among us to test it all on ... ?

dunno for sure though...

Bauldrick, do you have uboot installed on you LS2? (seems to me that you did ... ?)

hi kaiten, good to see you ... from what I understand, this has boiled down to what seems to be a problem w/ 2.6 writes to flash not being uniformly supported, between the ST (not so good) and the Macronix (good) chips ... If we can get someone to fix the flash-write routines correctly we might be in business again for _all_ LS2's.

It might (probably would) necessitate whatever developer interest in doing this having both variants of LS2's (Macronix and ST) on hand to test...

So everybody with an LS2 can run 2.6 kernel if they want, they just need to install uboot. Uboot IS safe to install on either of these chips - it's just that you can't flash for example foonas-em to the second half of the ST one?

Bauldrick, I'm working on updating that patch ... will you be willing to test out a 2.6.26 kernel image using tftp-booting?

I have no LS2 to check it on...

I'm not quite there yet ... maybe another day or so ... most of the patchfile is done, just 2 sections (ahhgrhh... the difficult ones) remain... then I can try to build it... may have to tinker w/ kconfig as well...

some quantified progress and qualified success ... I do now have a patch that applies to 2.6.26, and it compiles, but 2 things need to be checked...
1. the config
2. support for some things like serial have changed a lot so there may be more patching needed ...

once I get #1 sorted out I will post that image for you to try to tftpboot...

Bauldrick, from 2.6.22.19 to 2.6.26 is a big, big, jump... timer interrupts, pci, serial, ... for starters ... all have a lot of work ... but ....

I managed to get in notched up to 2.6.23. I've got most of everything all figured out except for some pci irq stuff... will have to think about that... will buzz you in the irc... if this works, then it will be easier to extend this out to 2.6.23.17 . Then maybe .24 will be easier.

if you want you can try vmlinuz-2.6.23-r3-lsmipsel-initramfs.bin in my user dir...

Bauldrick:The image I put is actually an EM image - kernel and rootfs all rolled into one. Don't flash it into your ROM - best to just test boot it ... It is probably easiest to leave your env vars at the known good values, and just use commands to test it. You can either tftp-boot it or put in on your hdd (like in /boot) and boot it from there... but it requires a different set of boot args...

If it is in /boot , use something like :
Code:
ide reset
ext2load ide 0:1 0x00100000  /boot/vmlinuz.gz
setenv bootargs netconsole=6666@192.168.11.150/,@192.168.11.149/ root=/dev/ram0 rw
bootm 0x00100000

but I'm not pretty sure the 0x00100000 needs to be changed ...

If 0x00100000 doesn't work, we can peek at your env vars to get a feeling for what makes sense on the LS2... and then adjust...

EDIT: looking here : viewtopic.php?f=12&t=3769&p=36319 and noticing some of LNI's posted env vars:
Code:
bootargs=root=/dev/hda1
bootcmd=run bootcmd1
...
ldaddr=82000000
guaddr=81000000
hdpart=0:1
hdfile=boot/vmlinuz
hdload=echo Loading ${hdpart}:${hdfile};ext2load ide ${hdpart} ${ldaddr} ${hdfile}
boothd=setenv bootargs root=/dev/hda1;bootm ${ldaddr}
hdboot=run hdload boothd
flboot=setenv bootargs root=/dev/hda1;bootm bfc40000
emboot=setenv bootargs root=/dev/ram0;bootm bfc40000
...
bootcmd1=run hdboot;run flboot
bootcmd2=run flboot
bootcmd3=run emboot

it might be more like

Code:
ide reset
ext2load ide 0:1 82000000  /boot/vmlinuz.gz
setenv bootargs netconsole=6666@192.168.11.150/,@192.168.11.149/ root=/dev/ram0 rw
bootm 82000000
but you'll have to try it out... not sure about those RAM locations still...

If it works, then you should be able to connect via telnet as you normally would for foonas-em.
