Hi all
Just a quick report to say that the pata driver in 2.6.24.x (pata_sil680) seems to be broken - this is the driver that makes it use the scsi subsystem not the other one. Does not detect any disks attached. More info as soon as there is any....

Have found the commit that breaks this:

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/g ... 76e8dae2ad

Rolling back this change and the ones that follow seems to fix this.

Thanks timtim -

I've been trying to compile 2.6.24 for the past week, unsuccessfully. Was checking and rechecking every config option. each time, the same error:
Code:
VFS: Cannot open root device "sda1" or unknown-block(0,0)

I thought i had all the settings right. now i know.
my config was good, the kernel was bad.

Ah - and I thought it was just me. I should read these forums more often...

Now attempting the "ALMOST COMPLETELY UNTESTED" patch kindly posted by TimTim. :-)

Linux jangada 2.6.24.4 #2 Mon Mar 31 19:02:46 BRT 2008 ppc GNU/Linux

It was quite an adventure for me, it was the first time I applied a kernel path..

Let's hope the guys fix this on the kernel.... timtim, did you report it already ? How can we track it ?

This is evidently fixed in 2.6.25 for the time being.

I've just tried to update to 2.6.24, as stated in this post: viewtopic.php?f=41&t=12881

I've modified the config once again before hitting this post, and currently my config is this, but it hangs again with the same error.

Now I'm upgrading to 2.6.27 hoping it's the issue you stated in this thread.

[edit] I've solved the issue, as it was the PATA driver broken as stated in this thread, there's an update in the thread
