The stock kernel supports /dev/mtd3. This device is mapped to the whole flash memory. we should add the device node for the allflash.bin to the openlink and freelink distributions. I added it and the block device with this commands:
Code:
mknod /dev/mtd3 c 90 6
mknod /dev/mtdblock3 b 90 6

Is this right?
on my box (2.4.20_mipsel_linkstation #3 Thu Apr 20 14:38:55 JST 2006 mips GNU/Linux) the mtdblock3 did not work.

Then I used

Code:
 mknod /dev/mtdblock3 b 31 3

Now I have

Code:

root@lassy:/dev# ls -l mtd*
crw-rw----  1 root disk 90, 0 Feb 13  2004 mtd0
crw-rw----  1 root disk 90, 2 Feb 13  2004 mtd1
crw-rw----  1 root disk 90, 4 Feb 13  2004 mtd2
crw-r--r--  1 root root 90, 6 Dec  6 21:56 mtd3
brw-rw----  1 root disk 31, 0 Feb 13  2004 mtdblock0
brw-rw----  1 root disk 31, 1 Feb 13  2004 mtdblock1
brw-rw----  1 root disk 31, 2 Feb 13  2004 mtdblock2
brw-r--r--  1 root root 31, 3 Dec  6 21:58 mtdblock3
root@lassy:/dev#

Btw, to unify the protection, add a

Code:
chmod 660 mtd*3
