Hi all,
Its the cap-in-hand time of year I'm afraid! Currently despite the status of the donations page at the main portal the current balance that I have for NAS-Central is nothing since the change over. This year we need funding to account for the following:

* A hosting donation to OSUOSL.
* Some money put away for a new server years down the line.
* Remember the old revo competitions? We want to bring those back.
* New hardware for developers to support.

Visit the donations page at the link below to help make a difference!

Edit: I'll start off by adding my existing paypal balance of £11!

Thanks to all of you that donated so far - keep it coming people! :)

Who has ideas for software bounties for a competition? Or other competition ideas?

Hi all,
I've been considering the prize for the competition. Given that all of you have Linkstations we will be going with something a little different this time again (cue drum roll....)...

This years competition prize is likely to be the Zyxel NSA-220, and Orion based NAS. This was chosen as it is not a buffalo device and hence most of you will likely not own one, also the Zyxel forum is our second most active nas-central forum after Buffalo.

If we get enough funds I'd like to put up a second prize of a Thecus N1200 - a GBit PowerPC NAS (faster than the HG Linkstation/Kuro) - bbradley and I have been poking the kernel for this and this month we published a new kernel and Ubuntu/Gentoo for this device.

I don't have any more information on the competition details yet other than it will run for some months to give people time to create something interesting - also I'm still open to competition suggestions!

Thanks

Thanks everyone again for your continued support in this funding effort.

I am moving £100 GBP of the current balance to the reserve - this is separate to the balance and is our fund for new parts for the server and a new server years down the line when we need one. I will continue to top this up with further donations when other things have been paid for!

Also this week I will donate $100 US from the balance to OSUOSL who host our server. I will phone this through this week as they dont take web payments from folks outside this USA!

Lastly I will hopefully order one of the prizes this week, and go out and buy bits to make a serial cable to go with it!

Keep it coming people! :D

OK, looks like the planned second prize, the Thecus N1200 isn't really available here anymore, apart from one really dodgy looking e-tailer. Fortunately there are a lot of alternatives available...

I'm going to replace this with a second prize of a 1TB Lacie Network Space (pre-ordering this shortly - it's out on the 26th here!) and a third prize of an Olimex ARM-USB-OCD (a USB JTAG device with a serial port and power adaptor) which I've already ordered. More info on those here:

Update: Just ordered the lacie network space too!

Starting to put up the competition details here:

http://www.nas-central.org/wiki/Events

I'm 90% sure it will be a an open competition to any entries - although your entry should be as new and as innovative as possible. Now is a good time to start creating your projects!

We still need donations for the main prize and postage for all the prizes (from me to the winners) although all the other prizes have now been ordered!
